PRESENTATION CEREMONY.

SUCCESS OF MAORI SCHOOL

JELLICOE CUP COMPETITION. The two principal miniature rifle shooting trophies in New Zealand, the Jelliooe Cup for tho highest position in the Imperial challenge shield competition, and tho Weekly Press Shield, which have been won by Auckland units this year, were presented by Lieutenant-Colonel J K. Duigan, chief staff officer of the Northern Command, in the Drill Hall, Rutland Street, last evening. Tho Jellicoe Cup, which was presented by Earl Jellicoe during his term .as Governor-General of New Zealand, was won by St. Stephen's School for Maori Boys and tho Weekly Press Shield was won by a team of Kingsland Senior Cadets.

In making tho presentation LieutenantColonel Duigan expressed particular appreciation of the results achieved by tho teams representing tho Auckland City and suburbs. He congratulated the teams on their success and referred to tho excellent spirit of friendship between the colonics promoted by the competition. About 1500 cadets from the Mount Eden, Kingsland, Remuora, Parncll, St. Stephen's School, Epsom and City units were on parade under the command of Major W. C. Finnis.

Tlio Imperial challenge shield competition is conducted l>y the National Rifle Association of Great Britain and consists of miniature matches for the youth of the Empire. The competitions involvo the King's trophy, which has been won on this occasion by the Union of South Africa, and the Imperial shields and trophies which have been presented by the Governors of the various Dominions for the best performance of the country's units.

The results of last year's competition reveal a remarkable improvement in tho Auckland area. New Zealand secured eight places in the best 100 units in tho Empire and of these five are in Auckland City. Of the second best 100 units in the Empire Now Zealand secured 17 places, five of which, including the first and second, wero in Auckland. Of tho first 50 teams in New Zealand Auckland gained 14 positions, including second and third.

St. Stephen's School had 38 boys competing and gained an average net scoro of 82 points out of a possible 100. The school stands 53rd on tho honours list of the best 100 units of the Empire. The chief instructor was Staff-Sergeant W. C. F. Temm.

A Weekly Press Shield is open for competition in each island and there is also a prize of £lO in cash to the winning team, as well as a silver medal for each member. Tho instructor of tho Kingsland Senior Cadets was Staff Sergeant I) W. Stewart.
