STREET NAME CHANGES.
ENGLISH TITLES DESIRED.
NEW LIST FOR AVONDALE
SUGGESTIONS TO COUNCIL. ■ AI "When the City Council is called upon *V lloxt Thursday to confirm its previous decision to give Maori names to 52 streots r in Avondale, tho present titles of which (luplicato street names in older parts of the city, it will be asked to consider a , list of English alterriativo3 approved by Iho residents most concerned. Some time ago, when lialf-a.dozen ' duplicated names were under review, the opinion was expressed by the council that, ■ when changes were hoing made in tho £ future, Maori names should be used. The ■ duty of making name changes rests with . Jihe Works Committee, and, on the amalgamation of Tamaki and Avondale with * itho city, it took tho instruction literally, presenting tho council with a formidable r.- list of Maori names to take tho placo of •those which were the samo as street-names "in other parts. :: To the expressed surprise of the committee chairman, Mr. J. Dempsey, the ■ council adoptod the list without discus- * ision. " The council asked for Maori : names, and it has got them, but I did not think that they would go through," ilr. Dempsey said. First opposition to tho new names was expressed when tho council was called upon to pass a special
order making tho changes. The feeling Of tho council on that occasion was that
it was hopeless to bring forward English alternatives on the spur of the moment, and it was, therefore, decided to make
the order on tho understanding that Avon [ dale residents would consider the position.
The upshot is that tho council will bo nsked to make the changes set out in the ' following list, in which the proposed new names are shown in parentheses Albert Road (Rowan Road), Alexander - Street (Laburnum Road), Argyle Street 7 (Lanark Streot), Ayr Street (Stirling ..Street), Boylan Street (Whitby Road), - Bedford Street (Hertford Road), Blako Streot (Jude Street), Bollard Avenue .(to remain), Brown Street (to remain), Browne Street (Pembroke Street), Beat-
