NAVAL ARMAMENTS.
AMERICAN PROPOSALS.
WARNING TO TAXPAYERS. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received June 2, 5.55 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 1 Tho Secretary of State, Mr H. L. Stimson, to-day issued a statement warning the taxpayers of the United States against tho cost involved in the contemplated naval armaments if reductions were not promptly made. He statod that the immense material burden would involve increases with every fresh discovery in warfare.
Mr. Stimson said he had in his posses sion a memorandum from the Director of tho Budget showing "that the unauthorised and contemplated programme for the con struction of new ships alone amounts to £234,160.000," to which must, bo added the increased budget for the operation of the ships. "With a similar expenditure among most of the countries of the world in tho next 15 years." said Mr. Stimson, "the economic burden to the world can well be realised."
