WINTER RACING.

ELLEIiSLIK MEETING.

GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES

WIN FOR MISTER GAMP.

CORNWALL TO SEATOWN.

The Auckland Racing Club's Winter "Meeting was inaugurated on Saturday under ideal weather conditions and the attendance, numbering 20,000, that, constituted a/record for a gathering at Ellerslie at this season of the year. The Gov-ernor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson reached tho course "prior to.tho running of tho first race and Their Excellencies witnessed the contest in three events. Tho Governor-General then returned to town in order to open the now drill hall for the "Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. From first, to last the proceedings were marked with that fine sporting tipirit characteristic of an Ellerslio gathering, and the arrangements made by the secretary. Mr. W, S. Spenco, as usual resulted most satisfactorily. The rave track was in capital order and everything connected with tho grounds reflected credit on the racecourse staff. The field for the Great Northern Hurdle Jlace was' reduced to 11, and as tho contestants paraded in tho birdcage they were rioted a well-conditioned lot, albeit Beau Cavalier carried a bandage on his near foreleg, while Kawini, who had both his forelegs encased, seemed to walk a bit' tenderly. lied Fuchsia carried himself very, attractively and his admirers were sufficiently numerous as to send him out in the position of ai warm favourite. The favourite got off well, but ho only lasted to the third obstacle, at which le made a faulty effort, with the result that lie fell heavily. Beau Cavalier led the field at a solid pace for nearly a mile and a half, when he was challenged bv Romait .\bbey and at the ninth hurdle tho Waikato gelding looked liko seeing it out. blister ' Gamp, however, had Roman Abbey well beaten at tho last hurdle, and, sfreaking right away in tho concluding stage of the journey, ho ran homo an easy winner. /In addition to Red Fuchsia, Comical, Wiltshire, Clockwork and Cybele also, fell, so that the contest was disappointing. Tho winner, Mister Gamp, must, however, bo given credit for a pleasing performance as his jumping v,-as proficient throughout and he put up a fresh time record for the race. In tho latter connection it has, however, to bo borne in mind that tho state of the race track cm Saturday was much more favourable than on any previous occasion at this i-eason of the year. Mr. E. W. Collins, owner of Mister Gamp, was present to eeo his horse win and he was warmly congratulated on tho success of his colpurs. The totalisator investments during the day amounted to £69,103. Compared ■v;ith the sum handled on the corresponding.day last year (£74,461 10s) this represents a' decrease of £5358 10s. DETAILS OF THE RACING. JERVOIS HANDICAP. NOTES ON THE RACING. SOME EXCELLENT CONTESTS, BY ARCHER. Seventeen started in the first division of the Jcrvois Handicap and Kawainga, Arcbileen and Arikitoa were best backed in a good betting race. There was a slight delay at the start. Cafonian going through the tapes twice, and eventually being left. Kawainga. and Justify moved first and then Roman Pearl ran through on the rails to lead along the back from Justify, Kawainc,), | Arikitoa. Maori Boy. Brilliant Light. Always,. Just Nell. Flitter, Mori Star and Taaneriri. There was little change in the leading positions at the half-mile, Wbcre Taaneriri commenced a sharp run to go to the leaders quickly. Roman Pearl and Taaneriri wcrj first round the bend with Justify. Arikitoa, (rails), Kawainga and Maori Boy all handy, Taaneriri liad charge inside the distance and stalled off Arikitoa, to win by a lengt"h and a-half. Roman Feorl was two and a-half lengths away third, and Maori Boy another four lengths back fourth. Tlien came Justify, Brilliant Light. Kav.-ainga, Always, Flitter. Mon Star, Just Nell and Archiclecn. The winner wa:j at a nice price and won well after making up ground very fast near the turn. Arikitoa ran a solid race and Roman Pearl only weakened in the last furlong. Maori Boy made a fine showing under his weight and will he all the better for the run. Justify, Brilliant Light, and Kawainga all shaped fairly, but Arehieleen; last, early, was never prominent. Win for Kauri Park. There was good wagering on the Green Lane Steeplechase, and King's Guard, Potoanui, Boomerday and Kauri Park Vero rather evenly backed. Mnidos led over the first fence and went on to lead up the hill from Town Rambler, Uralla, Boomerday, Airtight, Vexatious and Master Arch Crossing the sodwall at the foot of the incline Maidos fell and Potoanui catne down over him. Shortly after Uralla took charge, and she was the leader over the double Irom Vexatious, Boomerdey. Kauri Park. Airtight, Master Arch, 'town Rambler and King's Guard, who were in fairly close order. Turning into the back Vexatious assumed command fr"m Uralla. Kauri Park-. Boomerday and Master Arch, with King s Guard moving up. Running no the hill Uralla. dropped back and King's Guard went into fourth position. King's Guard jumped to the front at the second fence on the hit! and led down the incline over the stonewall into the straight from Vexatious. Kauri Park, Boomerday (who fell here) and Airtight. Once over the hist feuce, where they were almost level. Kaufi Park and King's Guard had a great battle and victory went to Kauri Park by n. neck. Vexatious waa eight lengths away third, with Airtight another five lengths back fourth. Next to finish were King Fame, Uralla. and Master Arch. Kauri Park finished very splidly and King's Guard went a fine race. Boomerday covered a lot of ground and even then was right up with the leaders when be fell at. the stonewall. For the second division of the Jervois Handicap Arihana was a good favourite,' ■with Indolent and Standfast also heavily backed Atapai was first out and led along the back from Otranto, Standfast, Camp Prince, Welkne. Arihana and Catapult. Atapai showed the way past the half-mile to Otranto, Welkne, Arihana, Standfast and Camp "■ Prince, with Storm Fiend next and T« Money moving up. Roundinc the bend

Atapai was still in charge, closely followed by Otranto, Welkne, Standfast, Arihana, Te Money and Storm Fiend, with Catupult and Indolent next. Inside the distance Standfast and To Monej drew out slightly and then Indolent challenged on the outsido. Standfast stayed on well to scoro an overdue win by three-parts of a length from Te Money, who defeated Indolent by two and a-balf lengths Palmares was fourth followed by Welkne, Arihana, Catapult. Mountain Guide and Storm Fiend Standfast began much better than usuul nnd'was always going like a winner. To Money ran her best race for some time and Indolent, did well to finish third after being very badly placed early Palmares wna slow to begin and caino from n very long way back. Welkne and Arihana had every chance and ran fair races without doing as well as expected. Numerous Falls. . 'fho Penrose Uurdlc3 was «■ chapter of accidents, only six of the 13 runners completing tho course. Priuco Lu was a slightly better favourite than Overhaul, with Lady Spalpeen also well backed. Prince Lu and Sulla led oyer the first fence, where Star Comet came down To Waka toppled over at the second fence and Overhaul followed suit at the third Prince Lu was the leader past the stand from Sleepy Sol and Sulla, who were clear of Ripon Abbey Harbour View and Golden Wedding in a strung-out field. Along the back Princo Lu was still making play with Sleepy Sol, Lady Spalpeen. Golden Wedding and Harbour View his nearest attendants. Sleepy Sol and Sulla came down at the fence near tho seven-fur-long post, and then Lady Spalpeen and Ciolden Wedding moved, up. At tho balfruile Prince Lu was still showing tho way, with Lady Spalpeen, Ripon Abbey and Golden Wedding all bandy. Prince Lu jumped away at the second to last fence, whero Ripon Abbey and Golden Wedding fell. Turning into the straight Prince Lu was well clear of Lady Spalpeen and Horomea and, though his rider allowed him to steady up too quickly, he came away wheu challenged and won by a length from Lady Spalpeen. Horomea was seven lengths away third and Harbour View a poor fourth. Abbott's Delight and Frothblower were a long way back. Prince Lu gained ground at every fence and would have won easier only for being steadied. Lady Spalpeen went a solid race, while Golden Wedding was going particularly well when she [ell. Ripon Abbey fractured a hind fetlock and was destroyed. * Great Northern Hurdles.

The Great Northern Hurdles was a splendid betting race and Red Fuchsia, was nearly 1:700 better backed than Mister Gauip, who had a call of over i'3oo over Roman Abbey. Beau Cavalier went out fast and Boon had th* field well strung out, Clockwork,-Mangam, Cybele, lionian Abbey being his nearest attendants when the field settled down. Red Fuchsia toppled over at the third fence tuid Wiltshire at the fifth. With 11 round covered Beau Cavalier was showing tlio way to Roman Abbey, Mangam, Clockwork, Comical, Cybele and Mister Gamp (who was standing tlic leaders up about a dozeu lengths) Clockwork fell at the fence in front of the members' stand and brought down Comical. After this Roman Abbey was in charge from Beau Cavalier and Mungaui, who were well clear of Cybele, Kawini end Mister Gamp along the back. Four furlongs from home Roman Abbey and Mangani were on terms iu front, about six lengths clear of Kawini and Mister Gamp. Nearing the second to last fence Mister Gamp began to close on the lenders and he took charge at the turn from Mangani. Roman Abbey and Kawini. Mister Gamp jumped the last fence safely and came on to win easily by six lengths from Roman Abbey, who defeated Kawini by eight lengths. Mangani was right tip fourth, with Maunga. Beau Cavalier and Karamu a long way back Cybele fell at the second to last fence Mister Gamp registered a very attractive performance and finished full of running. Roman Abbey run (he best race of his career. Kawini performed in his usual solid style and Mangani also made a fine showing. Comical was going very well when he fell, but there was over a mile to go. The race was run in record time Seatown Scores. Another good pool on the Cornwall Handicap saw 13i?os, Seatown and Paddon best backed. From a good start Royal Doulton was the leader past the stand from King Emerald, Paddon. Eager Rose, Seatown, High Pitch and Hyde Park. Going out of the straight King Emerald took charge and led along the back from Paddon, Royal Doulton. Coriuax. Seatown, Queeu Arch. Mosque and Hyde Park, who were closely bunched Running through the cutting King Kuierald just led Mosque, with Seatown., | Paddon, Coriuax. Queen Arch, High Pitch and Hyde Park all well placed. King Emerald and Mosque were the leaders into the straight, closely attended by Seatown (rails), Coriuax, Paddon and Queen Arch, with High Pitch and Hyde Park together next. Paddon was just iu front at the distance, but Seatown finished well on the rails and beat him by a, neck. High Pitch was two lengths away third and Hyde Park fourth. Next came Mosque. King Emerald, Corinax, The Lover and Queen Arch The winner was always well placed and came on, nicely nt tho finish. Paddon only failed in the last few f.trides and should shiue over a shorter distance. High Pitch went a, good | race and Hyde Park should do better next time. Odds-on Favourite Wins. Seven started in the Hunt Club Hurdles and Odin was backed down to odds-on, with Pikitnai and Tarrapeen also well supported. Soami led over tlio first fence and then Taumni took charge to lead through the cutting from Marita, Master Clements. Soami and Odin When they jumped the fence in the straight Odin assumed command and was the leader past the stand from Taumni. Master Clements, Marita, Soami and Tarrapeen. Going out of the straight Taumni again ran to the front and turning into the back he was out five lengths from Odin, who was followed by Master Clements, Pikitnai and Soami. Taumat dwelt badly at the feuce near the sevenfurlong post and Odin jumped to I lie front Three furlongs from home Odin was iu charge, closely followed by Taumai, Tarrapeen and Sonmfii (who fell on the flat near the turn) Once over the iaet feuce Odin had no difficulty in holding otf Taumai to win by a. neck. Tarrapeen was ten lengths away third and Marita fourth. They were a poor lot, although Taumai and Tarrapeen are likely improvers. The Sprinters. . Twenty-seven alarted in the Members' Handicap and Gold Money was n. good favourite, with Black Duke and Chciono also in demand. The horses on the outside received the worst of tho start. Dave, Marble King, Merry Mint and Chelone were quickest to begin, followed by Billikins aud Gold Money. Uilli.kius ran to the front at the end of a furlong, mid led through the cutting from Marble King, Gold Money. Dave, Vallar and Takufaina. Billikins nud Gold Money were first into the straight, followed by Awarero Marble King, Vallar, Cool mint (wide out), Takulanni, Kingfield and Black Duke Gold Money drew out, at the distance and won by a. length and a-half from Billikins. Black Duke and Awarere wore 11. neck back a dead-heat for third. Marble King was fifth, succeeded by Takutama, Merry Mint, Vallar, King Lu. Keddar and Coolmint. Once she hopped out smartly Gold Money never looked like losing. Black Duke was badly placed ' early and had to come on tho outside at the finish. Lady's Boy fell after going about three furlongs.
