BETTING AT RACES.

ONE DIVIDEND MACHINE. GAMING BILL SUPPORTED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. A proposal that tho totalisator should declare a dividend on the first horso in a race only was discussed at tho annual meeting of tho Canterbury Jockey Club. It was suggested by the chairman, Mr. George Gould, that such a machine would bo welcomed by owners, who now found the odds offered by the ordinary machine very short. It was difficult to make racing pay and owners might bo given an opportunity of backing their horses at reasonable odds. Eb was stated that a similar experiment in Adelaide had failed, the onodividend machine drawing no patronage. No resolution was submitted. Tho club decided to support the proposals in last year's Gaming Bill, tho publishing of dividends and tho telegraphing of money to a course.
