UNPAID RATES.
DRASTIC PAPAKURA ACTION.
OVER £IOOO OUTSTANDING.
PROPERTIES TO BE SOLD.
What was described as drastic, but necessary, action for the recovery of about £IOOO in outstanding rates, was authorised at tho meeting of the Papakura Town Board last evening. Rates on somo properties were outstanding for a considerable period, and tho owners had refused to pay. Judgment summonses had been issued without result. Tho Finance Committeo recommended that as the only means left to the board, tho ratepayers concerned should bo notified that unless the rates were paid within a given time legal steps should bo taken for selling the properties. Arguing that the board should take a firm stand, tho Rev. W. C. Wood and Messrs. Leitch, McEntoo and other members said that the suggested action should be taken, particularly as tho ratepayers concerned wore setting a bad example to others who had regularly paid. The board could pursue no other course, and it would show that it had the v courage of its convictions. Tho motion was carried.
