DEVONPORT PROGRESS.

REVIEW BY THE MAYOR.

An account of his stewardship was given by the Mayor of Devonport, Mr. E. Aldridgo, who has been returned unopposed, at a meeting of ratepayers last evening. Mr. A. G. Lunn presided.

The Mayor said he felt that Devonport had almost reached its limit in rating. The proper conduct of borough government was more than the collection of rates; it was the duty of the council to see that every portion of the borough received a share of the money spent. When the present council took office the borough was over £6OOO behind. The council had reduced tho staff from 106 to 46. which although it meant unemployment, was unavoidable. The deficit had now been reduced to about £2OOO.
