CHARGES OF ASSAULT.
MAN REMANDED FOR WEEK. Suspected of having injured a woman, aged 20, Bertram James O'Connor, aged 34, painter, was arrested by detectives on Thursday night. In the Police Court yesterday accused was charged with having caused grievous bodily harm to the girl, and also with having indecently assaulted a girl, aged years. On (ho application of the police, accused was remanded for a week. Accused: May I have bail ? I have an alibi. "'I would ask that bail should ho fixed at a substantial sum," said Chief-Detec-tive Hammond. "This is one of tho worst cases of the. kind that has come boforo this Coirt," Bail was fixed at £250. It is stated that the young woman was followed bv a man when returning to her home in Westorn Springs Road, Mount Albert, on tho night of March 28. She was struck on tho head with an iron bar, which inflicted a deep wound, penetrating to tho bono. After ho had struck the girl the man ran away. Answering her screams a, resident rushed into the street, and caught her before she collapsed on the pavement. lie took her into his house and summoned a doctor.
