FORESTS OR FARMS.
USE OF KARIOI BLOCK.
PROPOSED OFFICIAL VISIT.
[r.v TIC I. EG I' Aril. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] I'ALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday. An inspection of the plantation at. Karioi controlled by tho State Forestry Department is stated to lie contemplated by the Ilnn. Ct. W. Forbes, Minister of Lands and Agriculture, and tho Hon. \V. B. Taverner, Commissioner of State Forests. .Although no official intimation has been made it is suggested that the proposed inspection has been actuated by tho desire tn ascertain whether the land being planted is suitable for settlement, opposition to tho plantation having been expressed bv a section of tho farmers, who considered tho afforestation block could be used for a more productive purpose. The area in question is one of 30.000 acres. About 700 acres havo already been planted at a. cost estimated at about £12,200. The work has been in hand for two years. The, question of settlement had previously been considered by the Reform Government, which decided to proceed with afforestation.
