HEATH FIRES IN ENGLAND.
SEQUEL TO DRY WEATHER.
LARGE SURREY OUTBREAK.
THOUSANDS FIGHT FLAMES.
Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received April 3, *5 5 r.m.) LONDON. April 3
Several weeks practically without rain have resulted in local fires like miniature bush fires in many parts of Britain. The most serious fire so far is still smouldering over several square miles of heathland near Hindhead, Surrey. The outbreak was fanned by strong winds and spread at one stage at a rate of one mile in five minutes. The flames shot up into the air for a height of 30ft. and lighted up the country for miles around.
Several thousand artillerymen and four battalions of infantiy stationed in the locality were called out to join civilians in a fire-fighting effort which lasted all day. They succeeded in saving all the houses and cattle. •
