STEAMER IN GALE.
RARAWA'S ROUGH TRIP.
LONG ORDEAL FOR PASSENGERS.
ARRIVAL NINE HOURS LATE
[UY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday.
The Northern Steamship Company's steamer Rarawa which left Onehunga at 4 p.m. yesterday and crossed the Maniikau Rar at 6.30 p.m. had an exceptionally rough passage down the coast last night and to-day, with the result that she reached New Plymouth nine hours late. The Rarawa had 60 passengers, including many who were returning from their Easter holidays, and they all had a most uncomfortable trip. They wero very glad to reach port at 2.30 p.m. to-day.
Immediately after leaving the shelter of the Manukau Harbour the Rarawa ran into the teeth of a southerly gale and the wind and seas did not moderate until the vessel neared New Plymouth. She was lightly laden with only about 50 tons of cargo and the force of tho wind delayed her considerably, her speed at times being reduced to five knots. No damage occurred on board but, being so lightly laden, tho ship rolled and pitched in the heavy seas. The Rarawa returns north to-night.
