STATUE TO A BOOK.
Most people have heard of " Cuore." a book of sentimental short stories, written for children a generation aco by Edmondo de Anr.cis and translated into every language, even Japanese, says the Rome correspondent of the London Observer. More than a million and a-half copies have been printed in Italy alone. Cardura made fun of the author, whom he called " Languishing Edmond." and other critics tried to undermine his artistic reputation, but all to no purpose so far as" the popularity of " Cuore " was concerned. For the first time in Italy a monument is being raised to a book instead of to a writer. " Cuore " is to have its own statue, which will be inaugurated next spring at Imperia (Liguria), where the author was born. The sculptor, Giacomo Giorgi, of Turin, has personified the eight characters of the book, in which the author symbolises the Italian, people.
