NOTES ON THE KACING.

YOMA'S EASY VICTORY. SEVERAL GOOD DIVIDENDS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. Royal Acre was at a short price in the betting on the Waitara Hurdles to-day. with surprisingly pood backing for Bonhomme. Bonliomme led in the early stages. Atareria joined the leaders #t the six furlong post, where the pace was turned on, but Atareria lost his rider at the second fence. Royal Acre led Bonhomme and Polyphemus to the last fence, but once over Royal Acre came away to win with ridiculous eaue by a length from Bonhomme. Zircon was four lengths back third, just ahead of Polyphemus, with Puwhero and Vexatious some -distance back. Royal Acre is a possible winner of the best class hurdle races. He gave Henderson an easy ride. Bonhomme went fairly well. Zircon will be improved. In the Ngamotu Juvenile Handicap Royal Finance and Callapat were almost equal favourites, with Airway at a good price. Tenacre, Calapnt, Airway and Royal Finance in line turned for home just ahead of Banket. Airway and Tenacre went out, leaving a gap for Banket. Airway and Tenacre then drew away. Airway winning by a head. Banket was three lengths back, then coming Becky Sharp. Royal Finance, Callapat and Habit. Airway won well Tenacre registered an improved performance. Banket found her 9.12 and some interference too much. Callapat stopped badly, and Royal Finance was not judiciously ridden For the Flying Handicap betting Llanore, Lady Quex and Cimabue were divided by only £'lo in a great betting race for only five horses. Lady Quex soon strode to the front and was not troubled to win comfortably by two lengths from Whenuanui, who defated Llanore by two lengths. Cimabue was another length back, with Benzora three lengths away last. Lady Quex s win was confidently expected in New Plymouth. Again Bhe showed her undoubted Quality. Whenuanui shows decided signs of coming back. Llanore was not able to go the pace set and was well beaten into third place. Cimabue was beaten for pace by the lightweights. In ihe Moturoa Electric Plate iamerin, the brother to Hoariri, and Golden Flower were both solidly backed, but the winner turned up in Merxcis, who paid a lons price. Potency led at the turn from Merxcis. Joke Form. Lady Lucerne and Golden Shadow, but waß rolling about beaten a furlong from home. Merxcis and Joke Form came on, with Tameriri showing up on the rails. Merxcis hung on long enough to beat Tameriri by n long head, with Joke Form a little ovei a length away Golden Flower was fourth and Potency, Patrolet, Austerity and were next. Mexscis just lasted long enough to beat Tameriri, who came from a long way back to gain second place. Joke Form, with Blb. overweight, ran a good race. It was a poor class field.

The Taranaki Cup saw Hynanna, Yoma, Vertigern and Bright Glow solidly backed in that order. Bright Glow went to the front to slow down the field, and was joined by Anolo. Then down the straight came Vertigern and Yoma, with Hynanna heading the other pair. The pace was turned on five furlongs from home, when the order was practically unchanged. Anolo and Yoma turned for home ahead of Bright Glow anu Hynanna. with Vertigern right on their heels. Yoma strode to the front in the straight and held off Hynanna with ease, winning by two lengths Blight Glow was half a length back third, with Vertigern fourth and Home Made and Anolo next. Yoma won again very easily. Hynanna was really beaten on his merits He finished gamely. Bright Glow had everything in her favour in a slow-run race. Vertigern was again not quite good enough In the Okato Hack Handicap Kawha kina was favoiirite in an even betting race, all eight runners beiijg supported. Whtsogne led out, but Kawhakina tan round his field going to the turn, and was up with Whisogne and Gasnapper at the turn, where Spearmiss became prominent Whisogne hung on to the lead and beat Gasnapper by a head, with Spearmiss a head away third. Kawhakina was fourth and Airtight and Calamine next Whisogne won all the way. Gasnapper also ran a solid race and Spearmiss finished well. Kawhakina was badly ridden.

In the Mihii Iligh-u.eight Handicap Gold Cure wound up a slightly better favourite than The Swell ir another good betting race. A great race home saw Ihe Swell win by a head from Hipo. who defeated Borsalene by half a head .Gold Cure was fourth and Manly right up next. The Swell won well and Borsalene just failed to beat old Hipo, who raced with plenty of dash Manly finished well from a long way back. Gold Cure was a trifle disappointing.

In the Timaru Hack Handicap Havering and Gold Dawn were considerably better backed than Endorse. Endorse opened up a break in the first furlong, and was three lengths cleai ot Gold Dawn, Havering and Joke Form as they raced across the top Gold Dawn went up to the leader as they turned for home, and Havering was cut back. Gold Dawn came on to win easily by two lengths from Green Acre, who finished on to beat Havering by a length. Endorse was fourth and Joke Form next. Gold Dawn was of too good class for this field. Green Acre ran a fine race and Havering was unlucky.

THE ROTORUA MEETING.

CANDIDATES DISCUSSED. BY ARCHER. A very satisfactory list of acceptances has been received for the opening day of the Rotorua Racing Club's meeting to-morrow and everything augurs well for the success of the gathering. One or two of the fields may be rather small, but on the whole they promise to be of decent proportions and some, interesting racing should be provided.

The latest exploits of Owairaka have shown him to be an improved hack, who should achieve further success as the season advances. At" his last start he won (deadheated) in a very useful field of hacks and ran out nine furlongs in good style, so that his prospects read well in the moderate class he will have to meet in the Pohutu High-weight Handicap. Certainly he has a solid weight, but that may not prevent backers from making him favourite. Distances beyond a mil© pre more to the liking of Glena Bay than shorter ones, as he does not begin well and is rather more of a plodding stayer than anything else. Nevertheless he should run a mile fast enough to prove one of the hardest to beat in the Pohutu High-weight Handicap and will be running on when some of J he others are stopping. At Matamata last week he ran fourth in a better field, and, though he ha« 101b. more on this occasion, is likely to have a strong following.

Despite the fart that he failed to finish closer tlinn fifth, there was sufficient merit in the performance of Maurea in the. Tirau High-weight Handicap at Matamata to indicate that he possesses a chance in the Pohutu High-weight Handicap. He will have to meet a weaker field on this occasion and it may be worth mentioning that he will meet Glena Bay, who finished just ahead of him. on 10lb. better terms. Moreover. the half-furlong less to be covered should also be in his favour.

On occasions Bizarro has shown fair form and only last month he won a mile high weight handicap at Thames. The Absurd gelding has been beaten in his several outings in the meantime, but the class he will have to oppose in the high-weight handicapß at this meeting should give him a chance of gaining another victory. If he repeats his Thames form, he should not be far away at the finish of the Pohutu Highweight Handicap

Few of those engaged m the Hot Springs Handicap have shown any form and the event shonld provide the three-year-old filly The Begum with an excellent opportunity of giving further evidence of her worth The Begum won handsomely from a big field at Takapuna last month and she is in a class here where she shonld display her speed to the best advantage. Ability to begin quickly should be a factor in he* favour and the chances are she will Btart a good favourite.

Dp to the present the three-year-old Red Lion has failed to prove worth anything like the substantial figure he cost bis owners as a yearling and a couple of minor placings are all that he has to his credit Ace is expected to do something for Red Lion and he is now at a stage of his career where he should be on the upgrade, so that it is possible his form may show improvement from now on. Red Lion is engaged in both the Hot Springs Handicap and the Waimangu Stakes and will not need to be a good hack to show up in whichever he start®.

At Kawakawa last month Gazerin carried 9.0 and beat a moderate field in easy fashion over six furlongs in the Hokianga Handicap. She comes into a better claßs in the Hot Springs Handicap with a etone less and that may enable her to show up in spite of the stronger opposition. Gazerin is a four-year-old mare by Gazeley from a Multifid mare and is a half-sister to Illingar. She is trained at Whangarei by A. McMillan and consequently little is known regarding her progress in the past couple of weeks

To date the three-year-old Sea Cob has only started twice and there haß been little chance to torm a reliable estimate ot his ability. Like most of the progeny of Quin Abbey, he appears to possess some pace and possibly he will race more prominently at this meeting than he has done in his earlier engagements. For a novice he went just well enough at his last start to indicate possibilities and there is the chance that he will be benefited by his experience. Sea Cob is a member of J. T. Jamieson's team Five wins stand to the credit ot Mer vette in her laai six starts and her latest winning performance was to carry 8.2 to victory in a useful class field of milers at Ellerslie. There is not the slightest doubt that she is a greatly-improved mare this season and further success in the near futura should * be well within tier reach. .Mervette is engaged in both the Hotorua Cup and the Tourist Handicap and is likely to be fancied in whatever she starts. She has previously displayed ability to run either a mile and a-quarter or six furlongs well

Only a head separated Queen Arch and Siaosi when they ran first and second respectively in the liatamata Cup and oil that running there should be little between them if they meet again in the Rotorua Cup. On this occasion Siaosi will meet Queen Arch on 2lb. better terms and possibly may be able to avenge his defeat. However, there is little between them in their present form and the run last week may have benefited Queen Arch more than Siaosi.

Luck has not favoured The Lover in his latest engagements and consequently there liar, been some excuse for his failures. The class engaged in the Rotorua Cup should enable The to reveal his best and under his light weight he should make a bold bid for victory. It iB in his favour that he is a very fit horse and will have the services of a rider who thoroughly understands him.

Having his first run lor about three months in the Tirau High-weight Handicap at Matamata last week, Schorr demonstrated that he is in form by carrying the steadier of 10.10 into second place. Schorr is engaged in both the Rotorua Cup and the Arawa Park Handicap and is likely to make a solid showing in whichever event he is asked to contest. As the season has been advancing Mosque has been steadily on the upgrade and his form has been good enough to indicate that he will run a very solid race in the Rotorua Cup. Before the holidays Mosque carried over 9.0 and won at nine furlongs among the hacks and last month he scored another success in the Opotiki Cup. Now he is coming into better class he is not likely to find it easy, but be is a solid little fellow and just the sort to win a country cup with a light weight. When Kiri ran second in the Putaruru Stakes at Matamata she made a promising Bhowing behind a useful sort in Te Taone and may have given that horse more trouble only for being checked in the straight. Kiri will have another opportunity in a similar class field in the Waimangu Stakes and will only need to repeat her form to be handy at the finish. She was at. a long price at Matamata, but is sure to be considerably better fancied in her coming engagement. There are some unknown quantities engaged in the Waimangu Stakes and it is difficult to nay much regarding a number of the candidates. Some who have previously shown pace are Haviland, Arcade, Royal Lover and Dainty Manners. With the exception of Haviland, the horses mentioned have all previously shown form in notching minor placings and therefore have something 1o recommend them. On the strength of his good second to Hakanoa at Matamata, Black Maire is likely to be strongly fancied in any h*ck events he contests at tho meeting and he certainly seems to have excellent prospects in the class he will meet. With 8.5 Black Maire reads nicely placed in the Geyser Hack Handicap and will probably be the favourite.

On the country circuit last year Macroom •was very successful and the chances are that she -will again do well this season. For a time she was racing slightly below form this term, but she returned to the winning list at Matamata last week and won in a style suggesting that she was right back to form. Macroom is engaged in the Rotorua Cup and the Tourist Handicap and probably the shorter race be the one chosen for her. as she should be better suited by the sprint distance. After disappointing on a number of occasions, Town Bird gare evidence of striking form by running two seconds at Matamata. Although he gathers speed Quickly, the black sprinter has not been beginning as well as he should lately, and dwelling slightly at the barrier probably cost him a victory at his last start. If Town Bird jumps out cleanly and displays the dash he did at Matamata, be Bhould trouble the sprinters in the Tourist Handicap. Two seconds have fallen to Ti Tree in her latest outings and it is on the cards that she will soon go one better. Ti Tree is nicely placed in the Arawa Park Handicap and will probably start favourite. She should be well worth following in her next few starts.

Where the class is not up to metropolitan standard The Thorn is always worth consideration in races at a mile and under and no doubt he will command good support in his engagements at this meeting, where he will be racing in company that should be to his liking. The Thorn is engaged in both the Mokoia Handicap and the Arawa Park Handicap and should race well in either, although the Mokoia Handicap may suit him better than the mile race.

Horses likely to be fancied in their engagements on the opening day include Owairaka, Maurea, The Begum, Red Lion, The Thorn, Prince Lu, The Lover, Mervette, Kiri. Royal Lover, Black Maire, High Tide, Macroom. Town Bird, Ti Tree and Schorr.

CANTERBURY NOTES.

RAPIER AND LIMERICK.

FAST WORK AT RICCARTON.

[BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday

Footfall has again developed trouble in one of his legs and it has been found necessary to ease him in his work. This will mean forfeiting his engagements at the Dunedin meeting next week. The Autumnus gelding has had only one race this season. Rapier showed great brilliancy in his half-mile sprint with Limerick this morning and is rapidly getting into good condition for autumn engagements. Although he haß shown to special advantage over long journeys Rapier has sufficient speed to make him dangerous among the sprinters when specially prepared for events of that nature. He may play a leading part in the Publican's Handicap next week as well as in the Hazlett Cup. C. Emerson will ride him in his approaching races.

The half-mile sprint registered by Limerick this morning was a highly satisfactory effort. Rapier beat hiin of! the mark, but the Limond gelding *opn got on terms with his mate and both of them were geing very strongly at the winning post, which they reached in 48s. an exceptionally fast gallop. Limerick is on the way to his best form for his race with Aussie ai Ihanedin. Nightmarch was seen to advantage this morning when he was much too good for Beau Geste in a sprint over six furlongß. Nightmarch did not realise expectations at Trentham. but he is very well at present and may demonstrate very soon that that was not his real form. Lancer and 'Amorist will represent Riccarton interests in the hurdle races at. tile Dunedin meeting. . They shaped well m a school together this week. , Rotor has been galloping very attractively in his recent track efforts. Ihe slight mishap which preVented him from racing at Trentham has left no ill effeots and he is likely to show up in his engagements at Dunedin.

NOTES BY PHAETON

YOMA AND HIS RECORD. When Yoma disposed of his opponents in the decision of the Wellington Racing Club Handicap at Trentham on the 24th ult. he furnished pointed evidence that he had still to be reckoned with at nine years old. At Hawera last week the veteran followed up his Trentham victory by winning the Egmont Cup. jand at New Plymouth yesterday he carried his record further by scoring in the decision of the . Tararlaki Cup. Yoma, it is interesting to relate, won the Taranaki Cup in 192 G. Un to date Yoma has contested 84 races, and his record stands as follows:

First. Second. Third. Unp'ld, At 4yrs. . . 4 3 3 4 A syrs. . . 2 4 I 7 At 6yrs. , . 1 6 0 9 At 7yrs. . . 3 1 2 S At Byrs. . . 2 3 3 8 At 9yrs. . . 3 0 1 15 17 13 39

Yoma. who is by Campfire from the Sir Laddo mare Martingale, was bred by his owner, Mr. A. "W. Budge, under whose colours he has won prize-money to the amount of JC6S7O.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. Commendation is reportedlo be in steady work at Awapuni, but at present the Limond gelding is only engaged in two sprint races at the Woodville meeting.

The performances registered by Teremoana have not been such as to place him in the limelight, but nevertheless the gelding has been purchased for transportation to Australia. Teremoana is a five-year-old gelding by Rangitero from the Snn Francisco mare Santamoana.

Beacon Light, who has not been raced since last November, is now under the care of F. J. McKay, private trainer to Mr. W. T. Hazlett in Southland. Leg troubles have come against the Boniform gelding on several occasions and his standing anything approaching a severe preparation may bo repuded m veiy doubtful.

Royal Saxon, who won the Invercargill Cup under 8.1 on January 2 and who is engaged in the Dunedin Cup with 7.10. is credited with training on well at Wingatui and he ia expected to play a part in the settlement of next Thursday's race.

The news from Riccarton that Agrion continues to train on very satisfactorily constitutes pleasant reading. The two bus handicap events to be run at the Canterbury Jockey Club s Autumn Meeting be expected to find Agrion a contestant in the event of his standing a preparation.

Lndy Quex, who yesterday added the Flying Handicap at Taranaki to her winning repertoire, has raced very consistently this season, having scored eight victories in thirteen starts. Lady Quex is a three-year-old filly by Lord Que*, and her dam. White Clover, who is by Bezonian. traces to the Musket mare Katie Ferguson.

In referring to the two-year-clds racing in New South Wales this season " Pilot," writing in the Sydney Referee, remarked. " Holdfast stands out from everything else of his age racing in Sydney. The consensus of opinion is that our two-year-olds are not as good as in some previous seasons, but Holdfast would have shone in any year. In the December Stakes hi carried 8.9, and, without being fully extended, cut out five furlongs in lm 01s."

High Syce, a four-year-old horse by Highfield from Concise, who was bought recently in Queensland on account of a Melbourne lady and who has been transported to Victoria, is expected to make his debut under fresh colours this month. In Queensland High Syce stood out as the best horse raced in that State and much curiosity is evinced as to how he will fare when called upon to measure strides with Englishbred Gothic, whose performances place him as a horse of high standard.

Sir Arthur Duckham, leader of the " Big Four" British economists who recently toured Australia, had something to say about racing before he left. In what he calls his " unofficial report," which is really a commentary dn the social side of life, he writes:—"Australia is a sport-loving country, but sport costs money, especially horse racing, and I am just a little bit afraid that too much of the hard-earned cash of the people goes this way. I may be wrong, but that is my impression. When I went to Flemington to see the last Melbourne Cup what struck me most were the tens of thousands of well-dressed men and women. I never saw one really shabby person. What a comparison with Epsom at Home. There you will find thousands of collarless men and not a few with the seats of their trousers in various stages of disrepair. But not so at Flemington or Randwick. Everyone is dressed for the occasion and everyone seems to have money to invest. One is able to learn a good deal of the psychology of the Australian people on the Australian racecourses, especially on gala days—such as the Melbourne Cup."
