Australian Press Association-United Service LONDON. Feb. 5.
A scene occurred in the -House of Commons to-day. Questions were being asked about the coalmining industry and mention was made of an alleged shortage of coal as a result of which steamers were held np on the Tyne. Colonel Howard Bury, Conservative member for Chelmsford, aroused uproar among the Labour members by asking: s 1 not a farco that several owners in South Wales are ready to open their mines but cannot procure the 2000 miners remembers asked if the question was an insinuation. Mr. D. Kirkwood, Labour member for Dumbarton, waving one of his fists in the direction of the Conservatives, shouted: " Liar." Some of the Conservatives retaliated with cries of ".Sit down" and "Shut up." The Speaker pointed out that Colonel Bury had not intended to insult anybody. Mr. Kirkwood: "If you do not make him withdraw wo will defy you. He insulted the House and the heir to the throne."
After the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Winston Churchill, had been made a target for a hostile demonstration the incident was ended by the adoption of his suggestion that a question should bo addressed to tho Minister of Mines.
