DONNYBROOK MYSTERY.
MISSING MAN NOT TRACED.
VAGRANT'S STORY OF ATTACK.
TWO SHOTS AT MIDNIGHT.
CARTRIDGES FOUND IN CAR. (Received February 3, 5.35 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Feb. 3. There have been further developments in the mystery surrounding the disappearance of, Mr. Leslie Williams, an electrical engineer, whose motor-car was found abandoned at Donnybrook, near Melbourne, a week ago. Joseph Viscoe, aged 35, who is reported to have come from New Zealand, was brought before the court yesterday on a charge of vagrancy, and was remanded. The police took him to Donnybrook to inspect the bloodstained car.. Viscoe identified it as the one in which he was given a lift at the last week-end with Williams, who is now missing. Viscoe was shown a photograph of Williams, and admitted that it was that of the man who drove the car. He says he picked him up at Seymour. They had a drink on the way to Donnybrook, where both went to sleep. Viscoe told the police that he was assaulted and robbed during his sleep. Williams had gone when he awoke. He could give the police no assistance in finding him. He had no idea how the bloodstains appeared on his undervest, or how his head was injured. The police assert that Viscoe gave a false name to the Coburg police, and that he also tried to evade arrest.
They have secured a diver, who searched the River Goulburn for Williams' body in the vicinity of Seymour, but could not find it. The river there is full of snags.
Another motorist has informed the police that he gave a lift to a man closely resembliug Williams last Sunday morning at six o'clock. The stranger's hands were swollen, and he confessed that he had had a quarrel with his mate. A country stationmaster has also reported that ho heard a roadside brawl on Saturday night, followed by two shots. The police found two empty cartridge sliclls in Williams' car.
