NOTES ON THE KACING.

BORSALENE SCORES WELL.

LUCKY WIN FOR JOY KING.

[Br TE T.E GR A PH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] lIAWERA, Saturday.

For tho Okaiawa Hurdles to-day Vexatious. Atareria and Glcngariff wero all solidly backed, Atareria and Polyphemus led Vivo and Glengariff at the last fence. GlengarifE finished on very strongly, but failed to reach Atareria by a good head. Vivo was three lengths back third, and then camo Polyphemus Vexatious and Puwhero. Ataferia Lung out, but outpaced all except Glengariff, who finished very fast from an impossible place. Vexatious was kept too far back early and Polyphemia failed to stay

In tho Electric Handieup, in the absence of High Disdain, Vulpro wns backed down to very decided odds-on. From a walk-up start sho showed out clear and Golden Flower then ran past her. to lead hor to the turn, with Becky Sharp 11. and Habit next. Golden Flower ran wido at tho turn and Vulpre camo on to win comfortably by a length from Becky Sharp IL, who beat Monalofl by half a length. Golden Flower and Habit wcro next Vnlp-o outclassed tho field and Becky Sharp ran her best race to date. For tho Trial Hack Handicap, in a big field of '2O, Inflame. Airway, Tenacre and Endorso wcro solidly backed in that order. Endorse. Airway. Inflame. Flying Bingo and Tenacre began best and Endorse and Airway showed the way to tho turn from Inflame, Annoyer Tcnacro and Joko Form. Endorso stopped in tho ri'n in and Airway beat her by a lent/11l and a-hsilf. Amioyor. finishing on, wns halt a length back third, and then came Tenacre, .Toko Form and Inllnmc. Airway was always going like u winner and Endorro just lasted long enough to gain second place. Annoyer i" a possible improver. Inflame failed to reproduco his usual dash.

For the Tonka' Stakes Bright Glow was a £7O better\ favourite than Talisker, tho pair being the only ones backed with cny spirit. Blimp and Star Area showed tho way for five furlongs to Bright Glo.v, Keddar. Mcndip Nucleus, Home Mado and Talisker. Racing round the turn otai Area came out from tho rails, allowing Bright Glow to come through to beat Blimp by half a length Mcndip was nearly s. length back third, with Keddar. Stai Area, Nucleus and Talisker following in shal order. Tho run on tho rails mado tho race a certainty for Bright Glow, for Blimp was hanging on very well and it is doubtful if Bright Glow could have come roun' 1 and beaten him. Mcndip went a good race, but Talisker was a complete failure. In tho Meremere Hack Handicap Forlalico and Vaucluse wore the favourites, with both winner and runner-up at liberal prices, Fortalico was doing best of the leaders

at tho turn, whore Onward squeezed through and Second Thought made his effort. Second Thought was passed by Onward over the last few yards. Onward finishing on to win by half a length. Fortalico waß two lengths back, and then came Greenacre, Ngawahine, Vaucluso and Boundary. Onward put up a good performance. Second Thought ran a gamo but unlucky race. Fortalico and Poloteer aro two likely improvers.

For the Normanby Handicap King Midas was again a good favourite, with Gold Cure and Mnnly also solidly backed, Racing round to the turn Whenuanui wua clear from Monaghan and Borsalene, with King Midna, Orazone. Peastar and v Gold Cure next. Gold Cure moved up going to the homo turn where Whenuanui just led Monaghan, King Midas, Borsalene and Orazone. Borsalene shot out in tho straight, and holding off Gold Cure, beat him by threequarters of longth. Whenuanui was a head awuy third, with Orazone a close fourth. Monaghan, King Midas and Manly were nest. Borsaleno stayed 011 very well, Gold Cure was unablo <0 make up tho leeway in the straight. Whenuanui and Orazone are both likely to scoro soon. King Midas rar below form.

Joy King and Llanoro wero tho only ones backed in tho Waimato Handicap. Joy King was caught by the tapes and lost ground. In tho run homo Llanoro came on to beat Joy King by four lengths, with Banket threo lengths back. To Atiawa was next. Joy King might have won with an even despatch. Llanoro weighed in <Ulb light, so Joy King wus placed first, with Banket and To Atiawa in tho minor places. All isoven runners in the Inaha Hack Handicup wero well backed. Calamine having slight prcferenco. Whisogno joined Mies Mcrcia in tho van at tho half-mile peg and tho pair led into tho straight from Acred, Gasnappor, Spearmiss and Kawhakina, but Calamine shot up in a brilliant finish to bear Kawhakina by a neck, with Gasnappor at Kawhakina's girth. Then came Spearmiss and Acred. CANTERBURY NOTES. PREPARING FOR DUNEDIN. AUSSIE-LIMERICK CONTEST. MISHAP TO CHILDSPLAY. [BY TELEGBAPH.—OWN COII RESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday. The Auckland owner-trainer, G. Paul, arrived from the North this morning with Aussio und Papatu on tho way to Wingatui, where they will compcto at tho Dunedin meeting. The raco between Aussie and Limerick is arousing great interest. Tho popular view hero is that Limerick ehould win, but he will need to bo wound up for the contest, and this appears to be realised by F. D. Jones, who is keeping "Mr. Knight's champion busy with plonly of good work. Childsplay is out of commission, with no immediate prospect of rejoining the active division, She struck herself while racing at Trenthnm, and was suffering from a poisoned leg on her return homo. This has necessitated veterinary treatment. The filly has lost a lot of condition, and it looks as if Borne time will elapse before she is fit to resume training, even under tho most favourable conditions. Beau Geslo had only 0110 raco at Trentham. He was galloped on in tho Wellington Cup, and F. P. Claridge deemed it advisablo to send him home. Tho trouble was not serious, and he has made a good recovery. He is now galloping in his best style, as ho showed this morning when he easily defeated Rapier over seven furlongs. Beau Geste will bo a much improved horse when he tackles tho Dundin Cup, in which ho is likely to play a leading part under his light weight. Though Nightinnrch won the New Zealand Derby, his form sinco then has suggested that a shorter distance than a mile and a-half is his best journey. He is engaged in tho Dunedin Cup and Publicans' Handicap, but so far it is not known in which raco ho will start. Prickles has been on the easy list since slio returned from Trentham, where she registered a useful performance in hor only appearauce. Chide has done well in his work lately. Ho will make his next appearance at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting this month, and should run well in tho Trial Stakes.

Aspirins has not done much since she came back from Trcntham. but her brilliant hulf-brother, Silver Taper, was responsible for a smart lialf-milo this morning. They aro in good health, and will be kept going in view of engagements at tho Dunedin meeting. Silver Papo'r raced well in each of his starts at Trenthnm. Aspiring disappointed in her only appearance, but the raco should assist to improve her condition, and she may be a winner very soon. "Winsome Boy, who was purchased by Mr. M. O'Brien during the summer racing carnival in Auckland, was brought homo by W. J. Tomkinson when ho returned with his trotting team. lie still is quartered at stablo ut Addington. where he is building up preparatory to going into regular work. i
