mAstamata meeting.

QUEEN ARCH WINS CUP.

HAKANOA SCORES TWICE.

Fine Wbather favoured the Matamata Racing C'lub4 Annual Meeting on Saturday and there wiis a good attendance, including many visitors from the city and other parts of the province. Tbo course was in excellent orddr and some very interesting racing was provided. Tho Minamata Cup. which only attracted five runners, was won by tho useful Queen Arch, who defeated a strong favourito in Kiaosi ky tho narrow margin of a head, J / after a keen struggle up tho straight. The fields in tho other cvent3 wero of decent proportions and runners in tho hack races weyo /fairly numerous. Four favourites and a second favourito wero successful and tho other winners, with tho exception of Flappeiette, who sprung a surprise in the Hinitera Handicap, were also fairly well backed, • The consistent Hakanoa gave further evidence ot his worth by scoring twico, and his victory in tho Okoroiro Hack Cup stanped-him as a really good hack. A3 bo had noni) tbo best of the running and won in good) style. The cjips attached to tho stakes for the Matamata Cup and Okoroiro Hack Cup wero presented to the owners ol the winning horses, by Mr J. W. Anderson, president ofilthe club, who congratulated Mr. Hines atld Mr. Pateraon on tho success of their representatives. Speculation on the totalisator was fairly brisk atid tho investments amounted to £19,730 ;10s, compared with £19,689 10s last, ycaf, an increaso of £4l. Schorr was a£7 better favourite than Te Koroke who had a good call over Glena l 8 7" J"T WilS Koon iu fr<mt - to lead along the back four lengths clear of Ma. rea and Ripon Abbey, with Schorr and 'JV Koroke next. Running across the ton Prince Ln increased his lead to six lengths and turnea into tho straight clear of Mai, I rea, Ripon Abbey Te Koroke and Schorr*. } Once m ime for tho post Prince Lu commenced to t, re, but he stayed on to win by .» \ OUS . th „ fr ?i a ™ho finished fairly to beat Te Koroko by half a length. Glena Eay was a moderate fourth with Maurea ; Jlipon Abbey and Star Comet next. Prince !. Lu never looked like being beaten and Schorr went a solid race, • Te Koroko had j every chance and is #, little below his best i Glena Bay was running on "at the end and i 'trill improve over a longer journey.

Seven started in the Wabaroa Handicap and Hakanoa was a good favourite with. Te Waka and Hone Heke next in request and fair support for lihe others. Hono Heke was first out and led alone the back from Whaka King, Always, (JISMt Comet and Hakanoa. With three furlongß covered Whaka King took charge and led across the top clear o£ Hone Heke, Hakanoa, Always and Queen Comet, Rounding the bend Whaka King just led Hakanoa with Hono Heko next several lengths clear of Queen Comet and Always. Hakanoa drew out in the straight to win by two lengths from Whaka King, who beat Alwaya by half a length. Hone Heke was fourth, followed by Queen Comet, Lord Hopetown and To Waka, It was a poor field and Hakanoa carried his big weight in good style. Hot Favourite Beaten,

Five started i:o tbo Matamata Cup and Siaosi was an odds-on favourite, carrying about half tho investments and being twice as well backed as tho second choice Queen Arch. Regent attended to tho early 'running closely followed by Tinoiti and Red Day, with Siaosi and Queen Arcli next. Running across the top Siaosi (rails) and Queen Arch ran past tbo others and they caiuo into the straight togother several lengths clear of Ilegent. Queen Arch held a slight advantago at the distance and stayed oil to beat Siaosi by a Lead. Red Day was six lengths away third and Regent fourth with Tinoiti last. Queen Arch had not raced for several months, but tho raco was run to suit her and sho juet beat the favourito in tbo run home. There was a good pool on tho Hiiiuera Handicap and moat support, camo for Unoeo, Flying Tressc9 and Achiclecn. Arclietto dwelt at tho oturt and lost a little ground, Flying Tresses being first out from Crown Arch, Day Guido and Unoco. Running across tho top Flying Tresses just led Day Guide and Flapperette, with Tho Jack Jumper and Unoco also handy. Ibis order was maintained into tbo straight and once they straightened; up Flapperetto ran to tho front. Flapperetto then went on to win by half a length from tho fast-finishing Archieleen, who beat The Jack Juniper by tlireo parts o£ a length. Crown Arch was fourth succeeded by Unoco and Day Guide. Tho winner was making his first public appearanco and wa3 one of tho outsiders of tbo field. His supporters handled a solid double figure dividend. Archieleen camo from a long way back and would liave won in another couple of btrides. A Great Finish. For tho Okoroiiro Hack Cup Glenstar was about £250 bettor fancied than Black Mairo with Hakanoa a good third choico. Black Mairo and Glenstar were soon in front to carry on the running from Loveband. Always and Luminary with Hakanoa moving up. Running across tho top Hakanoa and Ripon Abbey moved up fast to join the loaders at the turn. Black Maire, Glenstar, Ripon Abbey and Hakanoa turned into the straight abreast with Furrie and Loveband next. The leaders fought out a great finish in tho run homo and Hakanoa gained the verdict by half a length from Black Maire, who defeated Glenstar, by a neck. Eipon Abbey was right up fourth followed by Loveband and Luminary. Hakanoa had all tho worst of the running in having to go on tho outside and scored a meritorious victory. Black Maiie and Glenstar also went fine races and Black Mairo was going on at the finish.

Six started in the Railway Handicap and Macroom was £lB9 better supported than Takutama, who ht.d a slight call over Town Bird. Takutama moved first followed by Atapai and Macroom. Along the back Town Bird ran through quickly from the rear and at the end of two furlongs ho held command from Atapai, Macroom. New Moon and Regent. Rounding the bend Town Bird was still in charge with Atapai, Macroom and New Moon in close attendance. Macroom finished too strongly for the others and won easily by a length and a-quarter from Town Bird. New Moon was three-parts ol a length away third with Takutama fourth and Atapai fifth. Macroom always appeared to have the race in hand once the field settled down and now that she has returned to the winning list should be worth watching on the country circuit. Te Taono Scores. The Pntarurn Stakes attracted good wagering and Te Taone was favourite at a fair price with Silver Division -and Asmodeua only a little less backed. Copey was badly left, Valstreet being first to single out. Valstreet showed the way across the top closely followed by Valorie, Lady Mestor, Kiri and Silvor Division. Valstreet just held a slight advantage from Valorie as they swept into the straight, while Kiri, Lady Mestor and Te Taono were also handy. Te Taone finished on strongly and won decisively by a length from Kiri, who defeated Valstreet by a neck. Oscar was running on in fourth position and then camo Valorie, Prince Val and Asmodeus. The winner is on the improve and won in a stylo that suggests that he will achieve more success on the circuit. Kiri was always in tho picture and only for getting checked twice in the straight would have given Te Taone more trouble. She was little fancied and returned a solid second dividend. V alstreet had every char.ce and failed in the last half furlong. Valorie displayed speed and will do better when more seasoned. Another field of six lined up for the Walton Handicap and Lucy Rose was backed down to odds-on, with Ihe L am| J also heavily supported. Town Bird dwelt slightly at the Btart and Lucy Rose was soon in command from The Lamb, Tinoiti and Some Lady with Town Eird running through. Before going three furlongs lho Lamb took charge and led across the top from Tinoiti, Lucy Rose and Town Bird. The Lamb was still in charge entering the straight closely followed by Lucy Rose, iinoiti and Town Bird. Lucy Rose ran to tlie lead once they straightened up. but was challenged at the distance by Town . Bird and had to be ridden light out to win by a head. Some Lady was a neck away third and The Lamb ft moderato fourth Only for hanging at the barrier Town Bird would probably hav© won. IT© ran out the 7* furlongs surprisingly well and finished .very gamely. Owing to an oversight the weights were declared for this event as with 7.0 minimum, but as the conditions provided for a 7.7 minimum an alteration was necessary. Tho difficulty was overcome by raising the weights ot" tho runners 7lb. WANGANUt MEETING. WEIGHTS FOR FIRST DAY. [BY TELECIt.U'jr.—I'KESS ASSOCIATION'.] WELLINGTON, Sunday.
