FORGED DOCUMENTS.
SENATORS AND THE SOVIET. INQUIRY BY MR. BORAH. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received January 11, 7.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Jon. 11. The chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of tho Senate, Mr. "W. E. Borah, to-day began an independent investigation to ascertain tho perpetrators of the forged documents, the contents of which were published to-dav. They disclose that ho and Mr. S. W. Norris, a member of the Senato for Nebraska, ostensibly received a sum of money to obtain tho dc jure recognition Lv America of tho Soviet. Mr. Borah also said that tho State Department should call upon the Russian Government to run tho matter down. 'lhe American Government owed it to him to clear the matter up. Tho documents purported to show that Senators Borah and Noyris each received £20.000 from the Soviet Ambassador to Talis. Other documents related to a charge that Senators Borah, Norris, La Follctte and Ilcflin received £243,000 from the Mexican Government. A committee of inquiry issued a unanimous declaration to the effect that tho charges were absolutely ialso and tho documents forgeries. The documents relative to the Mexican matter had been under investigation for more than a year, but the .Russian aspect camo as a complete surprise.
