PAPATOETOE PROGRESS.
PAVILION AND BAND ROTUNDA USE OF VOLUNTARY LABOUR. Included in the building programme now being carried out by the Papatoetoe Town Board is the erection of a sports pavilion and a band rotunda. The total cost to the ratepayers will be only £230, as nearly all the work will be carried out by voluntary labour, the board providing the materials.
For some time past lack of dressing accommodation at the reserve on the Great South Road has been a cause of complaint, and both summer and winter sports have been played under difficulties. Some time ago the Town Board undertook to supply the material for a new pavilion if the football, cricket and hockey clubs, who were pressing for further accommodation, would carry out the work. Construction is now well advanced on the pavilion, which stands at the northwestern corner of the reserve. The building is being constructed in permanent material and is 40ft. by 16ft., the cost being £l5O. The band rotunda is being built to the design of Mr. E. S. Sorenson, chairman of the Works Committee of the board. After approving the scheme the board has made a grant of £BO for the purchase of material, volunteer labour being forthcoming in this case also. The rotunda will be of the usual octagonal shape, measuring 21ft. across, and will bo attractively finished with concrete piers at each corner. Provision is being made for lighting, and when it is completed blinds will be fitted. Work has already been commenced on the foundations, and it is expected the building will be ready for use by the end of January, when it will be opened at a public ceremony. The rotunda stands at the rear of the public hall on a small reserve, and is reached from Wallace Road.
