AN OLD VIOLIN.
WORK OF FAMOUS MAKER. A VALUABLE POSSESSION. An old Cremona violin, made by the famous maker, Lorenzo Storioni (1751-1799), is at present undergoing repairs in the Swanson Street workshop of the Auckland violin-maker, Mr. James Hewitt. The instrument, which is worth anything from £2OO to £4OO. belongs to Mr. G. G. MacLennon, of the Bank of New Zealand, Onehunga, an amateur violinist of considerable ability.
Mr. MacLennon's violin is a sister instrument to the one used by Kubelik during his tour through New Zealand 18 years ago. Violins of this make are very scarce. Storioni was the last of the celebrated makers of Cremona, in Lombardy, Italy, tho birthplace of Stradivarius. His violins are handsome in appearance, slightly arched, and are of great intrinsic merit. The wood of the belly is very fine, that of the back rather plain. Tho tone is full, rich and silvery. His violins are highly thought of in Italy and are steadily rising in value. Besides Kubelik, another famous violinist to favour Storioni instruments was Vieuxtemps, who played a particularly fiue specimen. Mr. MacLennon purchased the violin in Europe.
