VOTE PASSED AS A JOKE
Australian and N.Z. Press Association. 'Received December 11. 5.3 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Dec. 13. Something in the nature of a joke was played to-day on Mr. W. C. Bruce, Democrat member for Maryland, who is believed to bo " wet." Mr. Bruce, on tho basis of a statement made by Mr. J. M. Doran, Chief Prohibition Commissioner, asked for an appropriation of £54.000,000 for prohibition, which the Senato promptly passed, in order to prevent delay in tho debato which Mr. Bruce was ready to precipitate, to discuss tho fallacies of prohibition. Mr. Bruco was thus cheated of tho op portunity to talk, but it is certain that the £54,000.000 will be rejected when tho measure comes up in conference with tho House of Representatives.
