AUCKLAND CUP.
BY PHAETON. An acceptance of seventeen for the Auckland Cup can bo regarded as quite satisfactory, and augurs well for a good field lining up at tho post on Boxing Day to contest the bid event. The dcfectio 1 of Star Stranger and Rapier leaves Count Cavour (5.12) at the head of the list. Tho veteran son of Solferino havinn finished in second place in the decision of ilie race in three successive years it goes without saying that much, interest will be centred in his fourth effort to captuio the race. Laughing Prince (8.12), Oratrix (7.'.3) and Hoylako (7.11) comprise the mos. fancied trio at present, but it is on all hands recognised that the handicapper, Mr. F. J. McManemin, has succeedea rn constructing a problem that will take some unravelling.
