END OF SCHOOL YEAR.

PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES

AUCKLAND GIRLS' GRAMMAR

REVIEW OF YEAR'S WORK. The annual prize-giving ceremony of the Auckland Girls' Grammar School was held yesterday afternoon. There was a large gathering of pupils and parents in the school hall, which was decorated with rambling roses. Professor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the Auckland Grammar Schools Board, presided and presented the school work prizes. The sports prizes were presented by Mrs. Ward Baker, wife of a member of the hoard.

Referring to the provision of now rooms at tho school, Professor Thomas said this might mean additional pupils. The board did not wish to see the school grow so large as to become unwieldy. "There are some, people who do not believe in prizes and who think the reward of merit is tho consciousness of merit," ho said. "I do not believo all that. Prizes always imply a certain amount and often a large amount of effort." In her annual report, Miss E. M. Johnston, headmistress, said tho roll number on March 1 was 583. an increase of 28 on that of last year. The increased number entitled the school to a new mistress and Miss E. J. Stewart was appointed. Tho most outstanding examination result of (he year was the winning by Betty Archibald ol the Sinclair Scholarship, for the study of biological science, tenable for three years at the University College. It was hoped to have ready for occupation in February the two new rooms which were being built on tho western sido of the school. The installation of electric light in certain parts of the building liad added much to the comfort of botli staff and pupils. Miss Johnston thanked all who had made gifts of prizes to tho school and those who had assisted in school activities and entertainments. She also paid a tribute to tho staff and pupils for their help during tho year. Musical items given by tho pupils included the school song, two part-songs by selected third forms and V. Mod. B and selected fourth and third forms, and a solo and chorus from "Jolantho" by solected forms. I'ollowing is a list of the prize-win-ners :—• SPECIAL PHIZES. Award Head Prefect.—E. B. Hawkins.
