A THIEF AT EPSOM.
MONEY STOLEN FROM HOUSE.
BRIEF ABSENCE OF OWNERS.
DOOR BROKEN WITH TOMAHAWK.
A robbery was committed yesterday afternoon at 89A, Owen's Road, Epsom, the residence of Mr. W. R. Haite. Tho thief gained an entry by breaking a glass panel in the back door with a tomahawkhe found lying in thei yard. Tho house was ransacked from end to end, but tho intruder took money only, a sum of between £4 and £5.
Various other valuables were not stolen, including watches, jewellery, a diamond ring and even Mr. Ilaite's; tobacco. About 12s in cash was taken from the children's money-box, a stout container of cast iron. This the thief broke open by usirfg tho electric iron as a hammer. Tho thief must have judged Hiis moment well. Mr. and Mrs. Haite left tho house at 2.45 p.m. to drive* into the city and three-quarters of an hour later, at 3.30, tho children came home from 6chool, In the interval tho thief had broken into and searched the house, decamping with the money.-
