IMPROVING THE PIAKO. [HY TEJiEfiRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NOATEA, Wednesday. The. tides in the f'i.iko River were abnormally high at the beginning of this month, but have recently be n exceptionally lov,-. This is particularly apparent above Ngalea, and although ifc is to a great extent duo to the dry weather the amount of dredging and river improvement being carried out. below tho bridge has sorno bearing on this condition. A F'riestmnn dredge lias been engaged for many months in improving the channel between Raweniwc and Ngalea, and in removing slips. A drag-lino dredge has been laying back the left bank from Raworawe, and is now between the Ngatea wharf and tho bridge. This work has necessitated the removal of tho telephone cables at Ngatea arid the moving of several of the Land Department's huts. Further extensivo improvement to the Pinko River below Ngatea will be undertaken when the reconstruction of the Michigan dredge nf< Horahoria is completed.
