RACING STABLES BURNT.

EIGHT HORSES PERISH. LOSS ESTIMATED AT £40.000. American papers to hand bring detailß of a disastrous fire at Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hertz's Leonn Stock Farm at Cary, Illinois, in which eight hishly-bred horses were burned to death. Reigh Count, winner of the Kentucky Derby and other important races in America this year, narrowly missed being burnt in a fire in which eight other thoroughbreds were destroyed a few weeltß a bo. The fire occurred at eight o'clock in the evening in one of tho Btables. The watchman passed through a few minutes earlier and everything was quiet. A ten-year-olil girl was first to give the alarm, and one of the farm employees struggled through the smoke to Heigh Count's stall, blindfolded him, and got him out.

Seven other horses were led out, but they were unable to save an additional eight, which included Leona Etta, a sister to Anna Peabody, the crack two-year-old hlly of last season. When an attempt was being made to lead out some of the horses they became terrified and rushed back into the flames.

The total value of tho horses destroyed was estimated at 200,000 dollars (£40,000). Tho stable that was burnt out was a new brick structure and supposed to bo fireproof. It cost £SOOO to build and was in use only about a month. An opinion prevails that tho fire was of incendiary origin. THE TAKAPUNA MEETING. FIRST DAY'S PROGRAMME.
