SHOES STOLEN FROM BATHS. " A VERY MEAN ACT." "It is a very mean theft to take another man's shoes at tho Parnell baths so that he has to walk home, on his bare feet," said Chief-Detective Hammond in the Police Court yesterday, when Loon Smith Coburn, aged 22, admitted the theft of a pair of shoes owned by Selwyn Innes Jones. Tho chief detective said Mr. Jones missed his socks and shoes. Tho shoes were recovered when accused endeavoured to sell them to a dealer. It was stated on accused's behalf that the act was one of sudden temptation. Accused was out of work, but a position was at present offering on a' poultry farm. He was remanded until Saturday for sentence. v

A charge of stealing £3 18s was admitted by Krund Marusich, aged 21. It was stated accused had entered a Dalmatian restaurant and, in tho absence of tho owner at tho back of tho shop, he had opened tho till and taken tho money. Accused was placed on probation for 12 months, an order for restitution being made.

Charged with assault, Walter Edward Hvdo Hill, aged 47, was fined £2 and bound over to keep tho peace for 12 months. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said accused had paid unwelcome attentions to a girl. He had been pestering her for two years and had been cautioned previously. Matters came to a head when accused struck the girl tlneo times with his walking-stick. Charged with assaulting a girl by paying unwelcome attentions, Bernard Reilly, aged 40, was fined £l. A remand until Monday was granted in the case of Gainot Wolseloy McMinn, aged 46, charged with breaking and entering the premises of J. Walker and Son, Limited, Queen Street. It was stated accused probably had no criminal intent, being under tho influence of liquor.
