OBITUARY.

MR. GOR MA N W. McINTOSH. LONG BANKING CAREER. THE EVE OF RETIREMENT. fin TELEGH.\rH. —own con respondent. J WELLINGTON. Wednesday. The death occurred at his home at, Well ington to-day of Mr. Gorman William McTntosli, general manager of the National Hank of New Zealand. He was due to retire from active association with the bank at tlii end of next month.

Of Scots parentage Mr. Mcintosh was horn at Dublin in 1350. He sailed from Liverpool to Melbourne with his parents when a small boy, the voyage taking six months. After living some time at Kyn nton, Victoria, where his father died, Mr Mcintosh, then aged 10 years, caino to Now Zealand with his mother, settling first at Tnvorcargill. Later the family lived in Dunedin and afterwards moved to the West Coast.

Mr. Mcintosh's great problem, young us he was then, lay in supporting the household. This left but little time for school or university. However, the greater the obstacles the more was he determined, by night school and in other ways, to improve bis education. At 17 years of age, in March, 1875, two years after its foundation, he joined the National Bank staff as accountant at the Greymouth branch.

Subsequently he was promoted subaccountant at Dunedin, in 1880; accountant at Ohristehurch, 1882; accountant at Wellington, 1883; manager of tho Te Aro branch, Wellington, 1889; and manager at Blenheim, December. 1889. He was interim manager at Wellington from April, 1897, to January, 1898, and inspector until December, 1898 lie was appointed manager at Invercargill in 1907, at Dunedin threo years later, interim manager at Auckland in 1923 and chief inspector, stationed at Wellington, from 1923 to 1925. Ho was appointed acting general manager on the death of Mr. A. Jolly and has been general manager of the bank since January 1, 1926. Mr. Mcintosh's banking career has thus hoeii confined to New Zealand and from first to last he has remained in the service of tho National Bank. He led a very active life, apart from his profession, his chief recieations being fishing and shooting, of which he was a very enthusiastic devotee. He had long been connected with tho acclimatisation societies of New Zealand and was president of the Otago society from 1911 until 1924, a member of the council of the New Zealand Association of Acclimatisation Societies and a member of the council of the Wellington society since 1924.

Mr. Mcintosh is survived by a widow, who resides at Wellington, and four daughters, Mrs. J. F. Ewen, of Auckland, Mrs. Tuppen, wife of Commander Tuppen, of 11.M.5. Diomede, now resident in England, and the Misses Mcintosh.

MR. ROBERT MOXDS. Ail old colonist and a well-known resident, of Parnell, Mr. Robert Monds, passed awav yesterday at his residence, 16, Logait Terrace, in his 81st year. He arrived at Auckland by the Dover Castle from Belfast 52 years ago. For some years after his arrival he was engaged in bush-contracting on Great Barrier Island, but later entered the service of the Public Works Department. He remained with the department for 37 years until his retirement on superannuation 15 years ago. He was an ardent yachtsman. Mrs. Monds died some years ago. There is an adult family.

MR. CHARLES NATION. [BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] RAETIHI, Wednesday. Tho death occurred at Raetihi this morning of Mr. Charles Cecil Nation, proprietor of the Waimarino County Call and the Ohakune Times, at the age of 55 years. Mr. Nation was born at Christchureh, and when a hoy he removed to Greytown, then to Levin and Shannon, his father, Mr. William Charles Nation, bring connected with newspapers at these places. Mr. Nation worked with his father and had been connected with newspapers for 40 years. Ho left, Shannon and came to Ohakune in 1911. lie bought tho Ohakune Times in 1914 and the Waimarino County Call in 1918. Although he did not. take an active part in public affairs ho was a keen supporter of all matters pertaining to the welfaro of the district. He was a member of the Raetihi Bowling Club, tho Ohakune Masonic and Raetihi Druids' Lodges. Mr. Nation leaves a widow, one son and one daughter.
