Mrs. Shayle-Georgo and Miss Hinemoa Shayle-Georgo arc visiting Wellington.

Mrs. P. A. O.'Meara, of Gisborne, is at present staying with her mother, Mrs. I. Speer, of Epsom.

Mrs. T. W. Green and the Misses Green, of Brisbane, arc visitors to Auckland, and are staying at (Jargon.

Mrs. P. Allsop and Miss Betty Allsop, of Hamilton, return to-day from a visit, to Auckland, where they were the guests of Mrs. S. S. Clarke, of Heme Bay.

Lady Ferguson, of Dtinedin, was the guest "of honour at a dinner party followed by a bridge party given by the executive of the Otngo Women's Club at the club rooms last week.

Mrs. Redrup, a distinguished citizen of Rhodesia, who was given the Royal Rod Cross and the Queen's Modal for the splendid services she rendered to the sick and wounded during the Boer War, has been elected a member of the Town Council of Bulawavo. She is the first woman councillor in Rhodesia.

At a well-attended meeting at Wailu, convened by the Mayoress, Mrs. W. Wallnutt, a proposal to provide Christmas trees for the children of Waihi was adopted with enthusiasm. The festivities, in addition to the gift trees, will include a musical programme, with the contributors in appropriate fancy costumes.

The monthly meeting of the Glen Afton and Pukemiro Women's Institute, was held in Glen Afton Hall recently. Mrs. Molony presided. A parcel of clothing made by the members was handed in to lie despatched to Sister Esther. 'I lie reading of an interesting paper on the " Uses of Lemons " by Mrs. Hunter, and competitions formed the evening's programme. Supper served by the hostesses, Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Hunter, and tiie singing of the National Anthem, brought the evening to a close.

Various reports and addresses occupied the attention cf delegates to the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Conference in its closing hours. Among the speakers were Sister Elinor. Mrs. Morton Ryburn and Miss Molly Finlay. A solo, sung by Miss Bissett, was much appreciated by the gathering. At the final meeting several foreign and home missionaries as well as Maori workers gave accounts of their experiences in their various fields of work Hearty votes of thanks were passed to all who were responsible for the smooth working of the conference, and to those who arranged for the excellent lunches provided members. The conference was a record one so far as numbers and interest were concerned. 220 delegates attending it.

In an interesting article contributed to the September number of a wellknown American paper Frances Drewry McMullen described the career and the work of Dr. Josephine H. Neal, a specialist on nervous diseases, who has recently been put in charge of a comprehensive investigation into the. causes, diagnosis and treatment of sleeping sickness. When the group of leading New York specialists appointed to administer the fund set aside for this survey by a well-known American chemist and financier looked round for the best possible persjn for this task, their choice fell on Dr. Josephine B. Neal. who is a veteran of 18 years' practical experience in highly specialised medical work. Communication by correspondence has already been established with investigators all over the world, and last spring Dr. Neal travelled abroad to inquire into the work already undertaken in this connection by European experts.
