VICTORIA LEAGUE AT HOME

TRAVELLERS WELCOMED. -V coiul>ii)atioti of busines# and pleasure was put before members of the Victoria League at the At Home which was held bv the league in the Lyceum Club last evening. Miss Mowbray, president, was in the chair and thero was a good attendaiico of members.

Tlio fust mailer to be placed before members was tlie proposal to send a cablegram to llis Majesty the King, through liis Excellency tlio Governor-General, expressing tlio loyally of the leaguo and wishing him a speedy recovery horn his illness. This proposal was heartily endorsed bv the gathering. Lady iledstrom, u visitor to Auckland from .Suva, was welcomed by Miss Mowbray on behalf of the league and two members, Mr. arid Mrs. JI. Goldie, who have just returned from an overseas trip, were also welcomed, Miss Mowbray expressing tlie indebtedness of the league to Mr. Goldie, who is a member of tlio executive and of tlio council, for much valuablo help. A little later in the evening Mr. Goldie was asked to speak of his travels.

The beauties of Honolulu and of Japan wero interestingly touched upon by Mr. Goldie, and of tlio latter place be spoke enthusiastically. Yokohama, Tokio, Kyoto, Nippon and various other places in Japan wero visited and Mr. Goldie had much to tay of thn art and the industries of Japan. As a Rolarian, much pleasant hospitality and courtesy were experienced, and the Rotarians were the guests of the Japnneso Premier, lie thoroughly believed in (he sincerity of the Japanese and were we in trouble to-morrow ho was sure they would come to our aid.

Brief reports on the various activities of tho league were presented. Miss Mowbray speaking of tlio work of the Graves Committee, the Literature and tho Hospitality Committees. Mrs. Rickerby of the work of tho Ever-ready Committee, and Mrs. Carr-Smith, in the absence of Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane., speaking upon that of (ho sewing circle—a branch which had beet) newly formed a few months ago. She also read some letters expressing appreciation from those who had benefited from this work. Miss Nation presented some hard financial facts.

A very enjoyable musical programme was given, which included instrumental numbers by tho Moore Sisters Instrumental Trio, songs sung by Miss Nancye Hanna and Mr. Harvey, and a duet by Mrs. Corbin and Miss Hanna. Supper, which was in the charge of the Rcmuera ladies of the league, shortly brought to an end a pleasant and interesting evening.
