A PIONEER HONOURED.
Mrs, T\. Evans, M.A., was the guest of honour at a large meeting of members of the Lyceum Club, in Wellington, when she was asked to accept a lifemembership. The president, Mrs. J. C- Anderson, in speaking for the members, said they were honoured in having with them the. first woman graduate of tho British Mrs. Evans was in 1876 a B.A. graduate of Auckland, and later an M.A. of Canterbury College. She had always been a woman of gentle manner and few words; but with the power to inspire others. Messages of appreciation wero sent from Lady Stout, Mrs Sprott, and Dr. MacMillan Brown, tho last-named saying that ho was glad to add these words 'of recognition: "It must not bo forgotten that Mrs. Evans had to play a lono hand in pioneering for education before coming to Canterbury College. She had been in tho forefront in developing secondary education for girls as tho first principal of Nelson Girls* College, She had shown the way to all the other centres in New Zealand towards a fine appreciation of importance to tho welfare of tho sex that pilots the household and, through it, tho youth of tho country. She marshalled tho great army of Vomen that now fills so enthusiastically the lecture rooms of our university coflag««, ami in pushing for graduation and r.onoan have put our men students on rr>«UiV Throughout tho British Empire, the whole advance in women's education ai.i: admission to university status can look to Mrs. Evans as its leader."
