FATAL FALL OF ROCK.

HUIA DAM ACCIDENT.

WORKER STRUCK ON HEAD.

DEATH ALMOST INSTANTANEOUS.

A workman at tho City Council dam at Huia, Mr. John Urquhart, aged 45, was killed by a falling rock at tho dam late yesterday afternoon. Mr. Urquhart was working with some other men in one of tho quarries connected with the construction of tho dam when a moderatesized piece of rock became dislodged above him and commenced to fall. Ho was struck on tho head, his faco being severely injured, while tho back of his skull was crushed severely. Death was almost instantaneous. It is understood that his fellow-workmen called to him to look out, but lie walked into the path of the rock.

Tho St. John Ambulance was summoned, together with a city doctor, under the impression that tho accident was not fatal. The journey to tho dam was made with considerable difficulty owing to the bad state of tho road, which had been recently blinded with clay and had been affected by tho rain. The body was brought in to tho mortuary at Auckland by tho ambulance. Mr. Urquhart was a married man and leavc3 a wife and two children. He is believed to have a sister residing in Whangarei.
