[r.V 1 KLEGRAI'n.—OWN CO F! n KSI'ON n K N I'. J TE) KUITI, Monday. There was a big surpriso in the opening event, at Te Kuiti to-day, the Pio Pio Hack Hurdles, nn outsider in Ramblin' Kid winning and paying a substantial dividend. Star of fho Eafct was a slightly better favourite than Stormy, who had a good call over Lady Spalpeen. Tinopono led early and (lieu Hightlown took charge, to lead nlong the back from Tinopono, Star of tiie East and Tnrrnpeon. Slar of tlio East ran to the front at tlio top, whero Ramblin' Kid and Lady Spalpeen moved up. Ramblin' Kid was first round tlio bend from Star of tlio East and Lady Spalpeen, and went ou to win easily by six lengths from Lady Spalpeen. Star of tlio East, was two lengths away, third, and Tinopono a moderate fourth. Then came Highfiown and Master Arch. Stormy was sore and was never going well, always being a long way back. There was another mild surprise in the Trial Handicap, the sixth choice, Sulla, winning from an outsider in Arehcval. Monetize was tlio favourite with Roso Arch and Te Taone also in demand. Oaßian and Sulla were first out. but soon gave way to Cloudbank, Flying Tressea and Te Taone. Cloudbank and Te Taone wero the leaders across the top and were first round tlio bend from Archovnl, Rose Arch and Sulla. Archeval took charge inside the distance, but Sulla finished well and beat him by half a length. Archileen, running strongly, wns a length away, third, with To Taone fourth. Next to finish were Prince Val and SwiftbTht. Monetize drew the extreme outside at the bar-ier and was never sighted. Eight started in the Waitomo Handicap, and Schorr, Siaosi and Mervotte wero the best backed. The Thorn was quickly in front from Tinokoa. Te Koroke, and King

Stnock. Tinokoa took charge alone the back from The Thorn, who was livo lengths clear of Te Koroko, King Smock and Morvettc. Tinokoa waa three lengths clear at the top, and was first into tho straight, with Tho Thorn. King Smock nnd Mervetto moving up. Mervetto camo through on tho inside in tho straight, and won by a length from King Smock, who defeated Tho Thorn by a length and a-hnlf. Siaosi wus fourth, with Te Koroke and Tinokoa noxt. The race whs run in heavy rain and neither Siaosi nor Schorr appeared at home in the going. For tho Maninpolo Hack Cnp Tho Lover wag a slightly better favourite than Leitrim. who was nearly twice as well backed as the third choice. Speechless. Arch Queen and Leitrira were quickly in front, and wero the early leaders from Whaka King, Tho Lover and Speechless. Leitrim took charge along tho bark, and led across tho top a eouplo of lengths clear of Tho Lover, Arch Queen and Speechless. Tho Lover moved up near tho turn, and was first into the straight from Leitrim and Speechless, who was just clear of Arch Queen. The Lover stayed on at the finish to win by a length and n-half from Speechless. Star Comet, who was a long way back early, was a length away third, and Master Roley fourth. Then camo Arch Queen and Leitrim. After the raco the gold cup attached to tho stake was presented by tho president, Mr. 11. Rothery. Only fivo started in tho Mbiroa Flying Handicap, and New Moon was slightly better fancied than Mervetfe, who was penalised for her previous success. Mervetto received the best of tho start, but was steadied, and New Moon took charge. Tinoiti joined New Moon in front at the lop, and they were first round the bend from Mervetto and Regent. Once in lint> for the post Mcrvette came away to score easily by threo lengths from Macroom, who defeated Regent by a length and a-half. Tinoiti was a poor fourth and New Moon last. This waa Mervette's third success at tho meeting. She is cxtrrmely well. The Rangitoto Hack Handicap was a fair betting race, with Valroe, Hakanoa and Ripon Abbey the best backed. Ripon Abbey and Archeval were tho quickest to begin, but soon gave way to Valroe and Nurjahnn. who maflo play from Archeval, Ripon Abbey and Hakanoa. Valroo and Nurjahau wero still the leaders at the turn, with Archeval, Ripon Abbey and Hakanoa in a. bunch.
