Though cftiality may not be a feature with this horses engaged in this year's Great Northern Derby, the openness of the contest makes for a keen interest being maintained in the probable issue. No less than 17 different sires are represented in the forthcoming classic race nt Ellerslic and that must be regarded as a decidedly interesting incident in connection with the acceptance list. A trio of Australian-bred one 3 figure in the list in the shape of Staghunter (by Quantock—Polaris), The Warden (by The Verderer—Sara Allgood), and Milhra (by

Australian Sun—Bonum). Staghunter lias not accomplished anything of a noteworthy character since ho won tho Great Northern Foal Stakes 12 months back. Tho Warden is quite an unknown quantity, and Mithra has yet to win a race at three years old. Of the locally-owned and bred lot, Prodice (by Catmint—Hyades) is the one with most to her credit and her prospecta can be viewed in a promising light. BONIFORM DEAD. Tho stallion Boniform, who had reached the advanced age of 21 years, dropped dead recently while turned out in a paddock in Canterbury. Boniform, who was got by Multiform from the English-bred mare Otterden, was bred by the late Mr. G. G. Stead. Ife came to hand early a'nd won the Breeders' Plate at Randwick in brilliant style, but he subsequently developed leg trouble and he was not seen out again until New Year's Day, 1908, when he won the Great Northern Derby. At the dispersal of the Yaldhtirst team in 1908 consequent on the death of Mr. G. G. Stead Boniform was bought by Messrs. W. G. and G. L. Stead for 1500gn3 and ho won tho Great Autumn Handicap of 1909 under 9.1. As a sire Boniform kept up the credit of the Musket line, and his progeny won a number of important races, chief of which may bo mentioned Scion (New Zealand Cup and Auckland Cup), Bon Revo (New Zealand Derby. Great Northern Derby and Great Northern Hurdle Race). Tho Toff (New Zealand Derby and Canterbury Cup), and Bonny Maid (Great Northern St. Leger). Boniform's progeny won stakemoney to the amount of something like £150,000, and it can bo said he went off the scene with a highly-creditable record as a sire. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES.
