An undue amount of flooding early in tho year has robbed tho prospect for the season's flax-growing of much of its brightness. Mills have been compelled to close for an unusually lengthy period. The settlers contend that the only remedy lies in the widening of the Waikaka Canal.

The Minister of Lands, Hon. A. D. MeLeod, stated last week that suitable plant was rot available for this work, and that tho question of remedial measures was being given fuithcr consideration.
