MODERN DANCES.

WHAT AN AUTHORITY SAYS. All modern dances are non-sequence dances. That is, steps may be performed in any order one pleases. Also, any steps, suited to the music and general character of the dance, may be invented and introduced by the dancer. By which it will be seen that modern dances give far more scope than did the old ones for the expression of one's own personalis.

In the dances of to-day, differences in speed, in rhythm, in direction aro far more important than steps. But dances have to be divided into steps for explanatory purposes —just as a musical composition is divided into notes. Beginners should not worry about learning many and elaborate steps. For them, and for the expert, too—tho style and rhythm of the various f dances are )the first things to study. Once the basic principles are mastered, tho variations are easy to learn. Tho fact that no modern dances have standardised steps is considered by some people to make it impossible for strangers to dance together. This is quite a mistaken idea; the modern hold has made it both possible and easy.
