Books of art union tickets from Sydney have been received in the past few weeks by people ifl Christchurch and other parts of Now Zealand. Tho recipients have been requested to sell them and forward the money to an address in Sydney. Tho arfc union is known as the "Southern Cross Art Union," and is being promoted in aid of the New South Wales Institution for Deaf, pumb and Blind Children, Many of these tickets have been distributed , bat u large number of people who have been to tho post office for money orders and postal notes to pay for their tickets have tlono so to no purpose for all correspondence addressed to a certain place in Sydney is stopped. The 1 holders of books oi' tickets are therefore unable,to pay for them. Tho reason for this is that the art union comes under tho heading of a lottery, and is therefore prohibited in NewZealand. Although it has been approved by the Attorney-General in NewSouth Wales it has not the sanction of tho Minister of Internal Affairs in New Zealand. The first prize is a solid gold model of tho Southern Cross and there are several other prizes of motor-cats.
