SOCIAL WORK IN CITY.
THE. METHODIST MISSION. A marked advaiicc in the work of the Auckland Methodist Central Mission is shown in tho report presented at the opening session of the Methodist District Synod yesterday. The policy adopted had been one of steady advance toward tho establishment of a-social service worthy of the Church, stated tlio report. During the winter 10,0000 parcels of food and clothing had been distributed to the poor and needy, while 5000 beds had been provided for workless men. During the worst period of depression over 200 cases a day had been dealt with, and the work of investigating theso and providing for their needs had kept the mission very busy. Nevertheless, the full programme of weekly meetings had been maintained. "One of the most successful ventures of the year has been the establishing of thfe business men's relief service," concluded the report. "Business men in the city are repeatedly being called upon by persons seeking charity and under this schemo they simply sign a card introducing tho case to the missioner, who investigates it and provides relief in cases of genuine hardship. This service has been welcomed by all business men, and is receiving very wide support."
