RECORD IN EXPORTS.
PROSPECT FOR 1928 YEAR.
GAIN IN TEN MONTHS. EXCESS OF £11,730,000. A new record in ilin value of a year s exports from New Zealand is being established in 1928 Tlio highest record to date stands to the credit of 1925, when exports were valued at £55,262.272 This year's total will probably be £57,000,000 During the first ten months of 1925 the exports amounted to £46,149,945, and in November and December to £9,476,231. For the first ten months of this year the total has been £48.445,630, &.:> that with no greater addition than was made in November and December last year, £8,235,000. the final total for 1925 will be exceeded.
According to a return furnished by the Customs Department yesterday the value of exports in October was £2,776,704 an increase ol £433,39? over last year Imports at £3.673.788 showed an increase of only £85,553. The net result of the month's commerce was an apparent excess of imports of £897.084. as comparod with £1,244,928 last year > There is consequently a reduction m the apparent favourable balance for the year, and it now stands at £11,730,347 Following is a summary of the returns for periods of ten months in recent years:— Ten Montlia. Kxporis. Imports. Excess.
It is noteworthy that the exports for ten months are only £50,000 less than the total for the-whole of last year.
As the calendar year comprises portions of two 6easons of production, returns for the period beginning July 1 are interesting. For tho four months of the new production year exports show an increase of £1,062,705, while imports, normally predominant in this period, are higher by £728,013. The excess of imports is consequently lower than in any of tho years for which returns are shown •>—
The improvement in the position may be illustrated by reference.to the proportions of exports to imports. In tho four spring months of 1925 ' exports were equivalent to only 43 per cent, of imports; in 1926 the proportion was 66 per cent.; last year it was 64 per cent.; and this year 70 per cent, of the imparts were balanced by exports.
