NATIONAL DAIRY BRAND.

ASSET TO THE DOMINION. AUSTRALIANS AND FERN LEAF. Among the many aspects of Now Zealand dairying which greatly impressed two Australian factory managers who recently toured the Dominidn was the national fern leaf brand on exported produce. Mr. J. Proud, of Camperdown, Victoria, and Mr. A. K. Sweaney, of Inverell, New South Wales, in their joint report to the Australian Dairy Council, make special mention of it. "Wo were much impressed with the' appearance of both butter and cheese packages, ■ho national brand, 'fern leaf.' m the fonu A tin attractive scroll with 'New Zealitid' stamped across the centre, being the outstanding feature. Further, the name of the factory (which torms an inconspicuous part of the brand) :s printed above a circle surrounding the national brand. The whole appearance of the brand is a decided asset. Contrasting this with our multiplicity of brands and the comparatively feeble impression of our miniature national brand, wc ,show to

The lay-out of the dairy buildings, where both practical tuiticn and research work will be carried out, impressed them as most suitable. All the buildings, in fact,, were well designed and extremely practical.

In a treatise on herd-testing the Australians note the magnificent results achieved in New Zealand and remark upon the circumstance that it is only lately tin Nuw Zealand Government lias come to recognise the national character of the work of the Group Herd-testing Federation. "When the lower comparative cost of herd-test.ug in Australia is considered, because of Federal and State Government assistance, it is remarkable how poorly our progress compares with that of the Dominion." they state. "Knowing the advantages of herd-testing, the question arises: Are ue dairy companies doing our part in organising this all-important work.''
