MANURING NORTHLAND

BIG TONNAGE INCREASE. FARMERS' GREAT EFFORTS. DEVELOPMENT OF- PROPERTIES. Evidence of a remarkable increase in the quality of lime and artificial manures being used in the" North Auckland peninsula is to lie derived from consideration of tho tonnage delivered at the principal railway stations during tjie past two financial years. The figures do not express the real quantity of manure taken to tho Northland, because much of it is shipped to tlio ports and coastal harbours, while mauv trucks lett at w;i\side flag-stations are not included in the figures quoted. Tliev have been compiled from returns from selected officered stations. Details nre a* follows I <127. Man- Man-

The increase in tonnage of manures handled at, these stations is nearly 50 per cent. Lime railed to North Auckland showed an increase of over 10 per cent., but much lime is produced locally and is carted over the roads to the consumers. Based on an estimate of £5 10s per ton, the manures railed to tho stations mentioned represented £157,234 expended by settlers during the year ended March 31 last. ' In return for that investment nfeent reports disclose a steady increase of butter output by tho dairy companies, while a Government instructor in agriculturo stated recently that never previously has there been evidenced so much effort by the farmers in the North to develop their properties and improve their pastures.
