A NOTABLE SON'S MOTHER.
Writing- of Mrst Elizabeth Smith, tho mother of Lord Birkenhead,' whose death in England took place recently, an English writer states that like the mothers of so many well-known men, Mrs. Smith lived a very retired life. She was a charming old lady. For many years she suffered from indifferent health, which forced her to live away from all excitement* Her unmarried daughter was her .constant and devoted companion. ,
One of the greatest comforts of' the later years of her life was the care and thoughtfulness bestowed on her by her son. . S|ie once said:—"No ouo knows what a good sou he is. It would bo impossible for anyone outside the family circle to realise how, in a thousand little ways, he is constantly showing his consideration and affection." Mrs. Smith was a woman of striking appearance, with a clear bright complexion, and snow-white hair that fluffed becominglv over her forehead. She had the charm of manner that noes with sincerity and though it was obvious from her conversation that she was proud of her son s achievements she did not allow her pride to prejudice her judgment. She always disclaimed any share in Lord Birkenhead's great successes later in life. She was of opinion that ho had built his own success with little or no help from others. She was a devoted mother anil undoubtedly the. home influence that Lord Birkenhead enjoyed as a child helped him immeasurably in his career.
