MOTORING MATTERS.

AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. OVER 400 NEW MEMBERS. 'l'he council of the Auckland Automobile Association met last evening, Mr. A. Grayson presiding. It was reported that tho Minister of Public Works intended to call a meeting early next year to discuss motor taxation. The North Island Motor Union advised the appointment of two delegates and it was resolved to urge that a representative of the Auckland Association bo added.

"Unless we keep an eye on matters wo will find that the petrol tax will be increased," observed a member.

The fact that local bodies were not liable for damage resulting from defects in roads was mentioned in a communication from tho North Island Motor Union. It was stated that motorists should report danger spots to the local authority, who would then be liable if steps were not taken to issue a warning. A suggestion for shortening the route to Helensville by about lj miles was received from a member It was pointed out that a deviation could be made following along the north-western side of the railway from Ohirangi station to a point near the Helensville saleyards, where the railway would be crossed. Tho correspondent stated that the greater part of the deviation would bo through property which would bo offered free. It was resolved to bring tho scheme under the notice of the local body. It was decided to recommend fhe Citv Council to make an experiment with white lines in lieu of the traffic dome at the intersection of Broadway and the Great South Road.

The Main Highways Board intimated that a tour of the East Coast districts would be made from November 23 until December 4.

A record in monthly membership additions was announced, a total of 419 being elected, Tho association has now nearly 8500 members.
