OBITUARY.

SIR HUGH BELL

Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received October 26, 5.5»p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 25. Tho death has occurred of Sir Hugh Bell, a director of Dorman, Long and Company, Limited, which firm is building the Sydney Harbour bridge. He was 84 years oid. Sir Hugh when in Australia five years ago said that his one ambition was (o live until he was 90, because he had promised to go to Sydney in 1953, to open the bridge.

Sir Hugh Bull was an ironmaster and colliery owner, He was born in 1844 and succeeded bis father, the first baronet, in 1904. lie was educated at Merchiston School, Paris and Gottingen. He was a director of Brunner, Mond and Company, Donnan, Long and Company, the London and North-Eastern Railway, and other concerns. His widow, Lady Bell, is a well-known novelist and playwright.
