LENGTHY WORLD TOUR.
AUCKLANDERS' TRAVELS.
MR. AND MRS. G. W. ALLSOP
ITINERARY OF 40,000 MILES
[from our own correspondent.] LONDON, Sept. 21.
Mr. and Mrs. 0. W. Allsop, of Auckland, have been staying at Newcastle-on-Tyno with Mr. A. M. Turnbull—of the firm of Messrs. Dickinson, Miller and Turnbull, solicitors, and himself a New Zealander by birth—and now they are in Edinburgh.
Already Mr. and Mrs. Allsop have covered more than 13,000 miles by.motorcar, including a desert stretch of 1800 miles, changing only two tyres en route. It is estimated that 2[ years will be needed to complete the whole tour, by which limo some 40,000 miles by land and sea will have been traversed.
Landing at Durban after travelling extensively in Australia, Mr. and Mrs. Allsop motored to Pretoria, Bulawayo, Victoria Falls, and Livingstone, returning to Capetown via Kimberley, where they were shown uncut diamonds valued at £IOO,OOO. They covered 4500 miles in South Africa.
Mr. Allsop states that tho most interesting part of his journey to date has been tho trip across the desert from Adelaide to Perth. With only a camel track for a guide most of tho way, his Packard car left Fowler's Bay with 12 tins of petrol, each containing four gallons, for tho first petrol station 600 miles away. This was reached in safety. -lftcr a hazardous journey. A sand storm was encountered and, in tho bush, snakes 10ft. in length stretched across his path and paid the penalty for interference. A Scottish farmer on the desert presented Mr. Allsop with a camel, which was useful for pulling the car out of sand drifts, but had eventually to bo left behind. Tho car is equipped for sleeping, has an automatic tyre pump attached to the engine, and an electric fan for keeping off the mosquitoes in the Tropics. Mr. Allsop will go from Scotland to Ireland, and reach London in November. He will visit Franco and South Italy during the winter months, and will sail for Canada next April. The programme is to go from Quebec to Niagara, New York, Washington, Los Angeles, the Califoinian coast to Vancouver, and then to Auckland.
