YACHTING SEASON.

ASSOCIATION'S MEETING.

THE SANDERS CUP CONTEST.

IMPORTANCE OF THE EVENT.

The annual meeting of tho Auckland Yacht and Motor-boat Association last evening was largely attended, Mr. J. B. Johnston presiding.

The report stated that during last season racing in the larger types of craft was exceedingly good, and it was gratifying to learn that even better fields were likely to compete in the future. Year by year ■the 16ft. and 18ft. classes were becoming more and more popular. The M class, wilich hac! gained two new crat't, was probably trie most successful one racing on tho Waitemata, providing good racing without the bugbear of handicaps. The association had admitted to affiliation tho Russell Regatta Club, this being the first body to apply for affiliation under the special rules.

For many years tho association had endeavoured to secure some measure of police protection for craft afloat, but without success. In his latest reply the Minister of Justice stated tho Police Department had not received any considerable number of reports of thefts from craft. Tho association suggested that whenever a theft occurred it should be reported to the police immediately, and a copy of the complaint sent to tho secretary of tho association, which would thus bo in a position to make definite representations to tho Minister.

It was pleasing to note again the good feeling which existed among tho affiliated clubs and between them and the association.

Dealing with the report, the chairman referred especially to the Sanders Cup. He said he trusted tho clubs of Auckland would recognise the importance of tho event. They should look beyond tho narrow confines of their own clubs and rcaliso that in supporting the Sanders Cup they wtix doing something for the sport in the Dominion. While Auckland yachtsmen might look upon tho competition for the c«p as a "drop in the ocean," Southern sportsmen attached great importance to it.
