Tho English cricketers reached Colombo early this morning, and met the Ceylon team during the day, but the match was spoiled by rain, which caused an inteiruption from 12 p.m. till 3 p.m. Ceylon batted first and scored 96 for tho loss of seven wickets. Larwood did not impress the onlookers. Tate, although always dangerous, did not conio up to expectations. White bowled the best, flighting the ball cleverly and making it turn quite a lot. He took three ■wickets for 44 runs, all off catches. Leyland took two for 29, Tate one for seven, Hammond ono for nine, and Larwood took none for seven. The only Ceylon player to make a score was tho former Middlesex cricketer, Dr. Gunasekera, who made 46. England has lost six wickets for 156 (Hobbs 54, Chapman 60). This pair in a light-hearted partnership made 101 for the first wicket in 45 minutes. Chapman hit four sixes. Hobbs amused the crowd by audaciously pulling off balls to the leg boundary.
