SPEED IN THE AIR.
RECOVERY OF THE RECORD. BRITISH EFFORT SHORTLY. British Wireless. RUGBY, Sept. 20. The British attempt to recover (he world's speed record in the air will be made within the next few days by FlightLieutenant David d Arcy A. Greig. He has been practising in recent weeks with a high-speed craft at Felixstowe, but he arrived yesterday at Calshot, Southampton. At Calshot Lieutenant Greig will practise with two Supermarine Napier seaplanes, either of which is considered to be capable of breaking the present record of miles an hour, established by ch Bernhardi (Italy). Lieutenant Greig lias never previously flown in these mat 1 ines and the actual attempt to recover the record will not be made until he lias had trial flights, and has adapted himself to the conditions of the wind and the tide in Southampton Water. It is expected that this will tako him only a few days. PILOT FALLS IN PLANE. ENDURANCE RECORD SEEKER, British Wireless. RUGBY. Sept. 20. Squadron-Leader J. N. Noakes, the Air Force oilicer chosen to make an attempt to establish a world s air endurance record, was injured to-day at. Martlesham Heath, Suffolk. An aeroplane ho was testing crashed. It is reported that the pilot's injuries arc not serious. • Mr. Noakes is well known as the inventor of the so-called "crazy flying. He was in charge of the largest monoplane in the world at the recent display made by the Royal Air Force at Hendon, and he 's one of the oldest and most experienced pilots in the service.
