SOUTHERN RHODESIA.
GENERAL ELECTION RESULTS. VICTORY OF THE GOVERNMENT. Australian and N.Z. Tress Association. CAPETOWN, Sept. 20. The second general election in Southern Rhodesia resulted in the Government securing a substantial majority. The Prime Minister, Mr. 11. W. Mofi'at, was the only unopposed member. ' A surprise was the defeat of the Opposition leaders, Sir E. W. Montagu and Mr. Frank Johnson. On the other band the Minister of Agriculture, LieutenantColonel O. C. du Port, was defeated. Labour, which was not represented before in the Legislative Assembly, captured three seats l'rom. the Government Party. ' Responsible government was instituted in Southern Rhodesia on October 1, 1923. The first general election under the new constitution was held on April 29, 1924. The Rhodesian Party gained a sweeping victory. It won 26 of the 30 seats allotted to the Legislative Assembly. Tho first Parliament met in Salisbury, the capital, on May 30. 1924, with Sir Charles Goghlan as" Prime Minister. On August 28. 1927, Sir Charles died and was succeeded bv the present Prime Minister, Mr. H. W. Moffat.
