LOCAL SUMMER TIME.

MOVEMENT IN AUCKLAND.

POSITION OF LOCAL BODIES. ORGANISING DEPUTATIONS. About two dozen supporters of summer time met in the Chamber of Commerce last evening ancl formed the Auckland Daylight Saving League. Mr. T. L. Thompson presided, the gathering being representative of manufacturing, commercial, yachting, rowing, swimming, motor-cycling, bowling, tennis and cricket interests. It was stated 50 firms and organisations had been informed of the move.

A communication from Mr. T. K. Sidey, M.P., stated there was no hope of a referendum and suggested any activity should be directed toward securing local summer time. The bill dealing with local option would be in the second reading stage on August 29. Supporters of the bill should urge that Parliament should bo given an opportunity of dealing with it in all stages during this session. The representatives of one organisation said members of Parliament who had promised support for the national measure had voted otherwise. It was stated a census of about 100 employees in an Auckland factory had revealed only two or three objectors to daylight saving. A speaker suggested an expression of opinion should be obtained from the Auckland City Council and bodies likely to be affected by transport arrangements in the event, of local observance. This prompted a word of warning from another supporter, who said the City Council and somo contiguous bodies did not see cyo to eye on these matters. If one authority approved summer time the other might oppose it out of " pure cussedness." It was. decided to oi'ganise deputations to local bodies and to ask Auckland members of Parliament to support Mr. Sidey. Tho following officers were elected Chairman, Mr. T. L. Thompson; secretary, Mr. T. McKnight; committee, Messrs. G. G. Kelly, <J. Findlay, E. Hickson, R. B. Lusk, W. Coltman, R. Corson, L. Heard, E. E. Nalder and J. C. Sibbin. A resolution favouring local summer time has been forwarded to the Auckland Education Board by the Vauxball School Committee.
